Trevor Noah to Succeed Jon Stewart on ‘The Daily Show’

Source: The New York Times

In December, Trevor Noah, a 31-year-old comedian, made his debut as an on-air contributor on “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart,” offering his outsider’s perspective, as a biracial South African, on the United States.

“I never thought I’d be more afraid of police in America than in South Africa,” he said with a smile. “It kind of makes me a little nostalgic for the old days, back home.”

Now, after only three appearances on that Comedy Central show, Mr. Noah has gotten a huge and unexpected promotion. On Monday, Comedy Central will announce that Mr. Noah has been chosen as the new host of “The Daily Show,” succeeding Mr. Stewart after he steps down later this year.

The network’s selection of Mr. Noah comes less than two months after Mr. Stewart, 52, revealed on Feb. 10 that he was leaving “The Daily Show” after a highly successful 16-year run that transformed the show into authoritative, satirical comedy on current events. (An exact timetable for Mr. Stewart’s departure has not been decided, Comedy Central said.)

He seems very intelligent and quick-witted and that probably showed through to the producers more than it does to viewers of his short clips on TDS.

He's good to be certain, but when John Oliver stepped in - there wasn't a decrease in quality. I think the show has good writers and a good format. It might slip over time without him, but if they stay with the team that they've got and the format doesn't change it will still be excellent.

Unless the show is going to be very different. One of the things that made the show great was Stewarts NJ upbringing. Then again, Oliver did well when he was in the chair.

Maybe Noah and Willmore will turn into titans of late night, but I'm not seeing it.

is to try to get someone just like the person they're replacing. There's too much comparison, and people don't always fare well when compared like that. I like the idea of doing something fresh and new and getting someone with a new point of view.

It would have been tough for anyone to succeed Stewart and Colbert, kind of like David Lee Roth and Adam Corolla replacing Howard Stern. They never had a chance.

Anybody in that position will have some difficulties I assume; bringing in someone brand new that they believe in has a couple of benefits. If he fails it's not going to be a Chevy Chase level of failure; it'll be more like "He was funny, but he wasn't ready for it." They can build on that. They can then bring someone new in without the direct comparison to Stewart.

And since he's from the outside world (South Africa), he has a fresh perspective as well. Kind of a John Oliver sort of thing.

Hmmm... wonder what's happening at Comedy Central. I like Larry Wilmore, but his show is coming up WAY short compared to the Colbert Report (almost any show would, I guess). But giving Jon Stewart's seat to this this basically unproven guy? WTF? I'll give the show a chance, of course. After all, I had never heard of Jon Stewart before The Daily SHow. But then, I had never heard of The Daily Show, either

There's even a documentary on him available via Netflix. He just wasn't on your radar.

The show is in good hands.

I don't catch The Daily Show all the time, and with only 3 appearances, not to hard to see how I could have missed him. Oh well, he's making more money now, so good for him.

I saw some clips from his stand-up days on Slate. Very funny guy.

My first reaction was a knee jerk, "No way this relatively unknown dude can replace Jon Stewart!" But after watching his stuff, I have changed my mind. If his stand-up can translate to the Daily Show desk; he has a good chance.

Questionable tweets by new ‘Daily Show’ host Noah draw fire

"""""By Tuesday, Trevor Noah was a trending topic on Twitter as he drew fire for jokes described as tasteless, hateful — and unfunny. Roseanne Barr was among those calling out the 31-year-old South African comic, who has an international following and two million Twitter followers.

“U should cease sexist & anti semitic ‘humor’ about jewish women & Israel,” she tweeted late Monday.

Noah’s controversial tweets were posted between 2009 and 2014.

In 2009 he wrote, “Almost bumped a Jewish kid crossing the road. He didn’t look b4 crossing but I still would hav felt so bad in my german car!”

A 2012 post derides “jewish chicks.” Another one from 2011 jokes about “a hot white woman.”

In a post from 2011, he writes, “Oh yeah the weekend. People are gonna get drunk & think that I’m sexy!” He attributes the joke to “fat chicks everywhere.”

When a fan tweeted him last fall with a request to come to Texas, Noah replied, “But you’ve already got Ebola?”""""""
