The Netanyahu Paradox: How Obama is Using Bibi's Arrogance to Box in the Right and Promote PeaceWhile it is in and of itself newsworthy that Netanyahu's government crossed a line by disseminating it to members of Congress and while it is particularly troubling that those members of Congress participated in espionage against our own country by not immediately notifying the White House about Netanyahu's attempt to circumvent the diplomatic process, the one element of the story that seems to be falling by the wayside is something we highlighted three weeks ago: Barack Obama is closer than any leader has ever been to striking an international pact to peacefully put nuclear weapons out of Iran's reach.

Netanyahu may have won an election, but he seems to have lost a tremendous amount of ground on the global stage and within the US.
Barack Obama has generally taken a simple but deadly effective approach to neutralizing Right wing belligerence. Hand them enough rope, wait for them to screw up, then move in at lightening speed. He said it a long time ago, even before he was president, that he would work with anyone, but if you come at him with an attack posture, he will knock you out.
Now he has used that tactic with the precision of a neurosurgeon against Bibi's follies, and at the same time, tied and hung Netanyahu like a sinking rock around the American far Right's neck, all the while continuing to advance his global leadership. The GOP is back in a box: if they now back Netanyahu, they are committing sedition by backing a foreign leader who not only spied on the US but passed that info to unauthorized individuals, and if they don't, their base is going to call them a n____ lover. Welcome to the Netanyahu Paradox.

Well done, Mr. President.

(10,650 posts)The president does deserve a lot of credit for standing up to the pompous Netanyahu.

(23,946 posts)opponent is as incompetent and predictable as Bibi and Boehner and the Tea Party.
When you know precisely when and why "heads will explode", and whose heads, then you can do a lot while your enemies are doing their regular cleanups.
Let the party of pretend sip deeply of their own tea and then when they predictably burn themselves move quickly into the gap and advance the cause of peace on the world stage they even refuse to admit exists.
Quickly before the RW propaganda machines regain their balance, as in suggesting America may recognize a Palestinian stste as a full member of the U.N......maybe at the same time as Cuba is recognized.

What Obama has done is to make the Israeli government and its policies toxic and indefensible.
Obama hammered Netanyahu on the race-baiting and the two-state solution abandonment.
He would not be doing this if Netanyahu had made decent efforts in the past.
What he's doing is boxing Netanyahu in. Netanyahu is an apartheidist, leading a coalition of pro-apartheid and apartheid-curious parties. So, when he acts to expand settlements, ram through a "Jewish state not a democratic state" law through, and continue to steal tax revenues from the Palestinians, he will be proving Obama correct. No one is going to buy that he's really interested in a two-state solution.
The only way he can get people to believe that he takes it seriously is through ACTION like freezing settlement expansion.
And that ain't happening.

This is a killer strategy!
Remember how Republicans shut down government last year, and it made people so mad that they crushed Republicans at the ballot box?
Bibi will doubtless suffer the same fate!
