There have been nut cases from the beginning -- Whitefield's "Great Awakening" (which was aided and facilitated by B. Franklin) -- but what truly galled men like Jefferson was the financial support of institutions to which they were adamantly opposed.

The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom (1786), precursor to the First Amendment:

Be it enacted by General Assembly that no man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place, or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested, or burthened in his body or goods, nor shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief, but that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of Religion, and that the same shall in no wise diminish, enlarge or affect their civil capacities.

When enacted, the Statute disestablished the Church of England in Virginia and guaranteed freedom of religion to all religious faiths, even the Catholics and Jews.

A parent of some infant with cancer or some other serious illness needs to teach him just how wrong he is. How dare he?? This really calls for a direct act of God. Where is His wrath when someone like this needs it so badly?

It seems more like the kind of thing his lunatic dad says, though the precise quote turns up nowhere for anyone, before Cruz declared his candidacy a few days ago.
