http://www.thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/uncucumbered/florida_introduces_adoption_revenge_legislationFlorida State Rep. Jason Brodeur has responded to the legislature's vote to repeal a law banning gay adoption by introducing a "license to discriminate" bill for adoption agencies.
Earlier this month, the Florida House passed an amendment that finally repealed a 1977 gay adoption ban that was passed during the Anita Bryant "Save Our Children" hysteria. The ban was deemed unconstitutional by a court five years ago, and Charlie Crist, who was governor at that time, refused to appeal the decision, but the law still remained on the books....
Now, one of those unhappy Republicans, State Rep. Jason Brodeur, (photo above) has introduced what is being called "revenge" legislation in response to the repeal of that law.
Rep. Brodeur is the sponsor of PCB HHSC 15-03, the "Conscience Protection For Private Child-Placement Agencies Act," which is reported to have language written by the Florida Catholic Conference and Florida Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission. The bill would permit adoption agencies to discriminate against applicants based on "religious or moral convictions" without losing their licenses or their state funding. It would also protect the agencies against lawsuits.
