Clearly, the hardship of receiving Obamacare was causing Ted a great deal of pain, the President said. This should take care of that.
Obama acknowledged that the executive order, which makes Cruz the only American expressly forbidden from signing up for Obamacare, was an extraordinary measure, but added, I felt it was a necessary humanitarian gesture to protect Ted from the law he hates.
Even as he signed the order, the President said that he was torn about barring Cruz from coverage, stating,Hes definitely someone who would benefit from seeing a doctor.

(12,647 posts)The irony is just too delish. There's an interesting discussion starting on another thread, asking why he purchased an Obamacare policy in the first place. It just doesn't make sense. It's my understanding the wife is losing her insurance due to leaving her job at Goldman-Sachs. Why isn't she just added to his federal health insurance policy?

(9,279 posts)All members of Congress are required to purchase their insurance through the Exchange, for which they get an allowance (which Cruz claims he's not taking).
His wife must have had the option of COBRA at her job, why didn't they do that? Probably way more expensive than an Exchange plan, even at full price. Ha.

(12,647 posts)I thought federal insurance was separate from Obamacare. I think it's great they tied the two together.

(17,505 posts)If I remember correctly, the Repugs complained that Congress was not obliged to use the ACA and that was an obvious sign the law was flawed and needed to go. So Dems went: "Oh, you're right. Here ya go.... now Congress is obliged to use it.... problem solved."
Ooops!

(3,427 posts)Before the ACA took effect last year, members of Congress received employer-subsidized health insurance through the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, the same program that covers most Federal employees. Like most large employers, the government paid a large chunk of their premiums, but not all. It was not free.
However, the ACA took away that benefit, thanks to an amendment introduced in 2009 by Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley. Instead, Congress members and their staffs have to purchase health insurance from the insurance exchange for their state in order to continue to receive the employer subsidy.
