RICHMOND, VA Yesterday, Public Policy Polling released the results a new survey showing Virginians have a very low opinion of Eric Cantor (VA-07).
This poll shows that Virginians are tired of Eric Cantors partisan political gamesmanship. Virginians are looking to Congress for solutions instead, Cantor spends his time on power politics and focused on his own personal political ambitions. said Wayne Powell, Democratic candidate for Congress in Virginias 7th congressional district.
Virginians all across the state reject Cantor's ideological obstructionism. Virginians remember that, after last summers earthquake, Cantor held disaster relief for Louisa County hostage. He delayed help for his own constituents to score political points with his Tea Party cronies in his own party. Even Republicans are growing leery of Cantors extreme partisan power grabs, added Powell.
Just 27% of Virginians have a favorable opinion of Cantor. Across demographic groups, Eric Cantor has alienated Virginia voters.

Does anybody know? Has the State Democratic Party found a credible candidate to run against Mr. Cantor? I'd like to see Mr. Cantor embark on his next career as a hack lobbyist sooner rather than later.

(8,434 posts)It's a very red district.
Will that solve anything in the end? Probably not, but it might tone down the crazy.

(82,849 posts)But there will be the salutary effect of reducing the seat's seniority, and sending it to the back of the line leadership-wise. The Tea Baggers might just be dumb enough to do that.

(34,525 posts)of the growing blue/purple areas of NoVA, Richmond and Charlottesville (university town). It includes the rural areas and some wealthy horse/wine country outside the NoVA exurbs, those east of Charlottesville, and the northern suburbs of Richmond. Eventually, the growth (or redistricting) will make his district less red, but it will take a long time.
The upside is that leaves more blue voters to have more influence in other districts.

Here's a map of the district for those not from the area:

(15 posts)Apparently, some are not reading the post very carefully -- Mr. Powell, a former military officer, is the Democratic candidate to replace Eric Cantor in the 7th District. Unfortunately, this District has been designed quite carefully to maintain a GOP advantage, but even here Mr. Cantor has begun to lose some luster. (For my sins, I have now lived in the 7th District for the past dozen or so years -- not a great fate for a loyal Dem -- so, maybe this is our year! -- don't worry, I won't hold my breath -- but I, and many others, will certainly vote.)

(82,849 posts)I skimmed the post and noticed Wayne Powell's name, but it didn't register that he was the Democratic candidate. Good luck to him, and maybe I can break loose an extra sawbuck or two to support his campaign.
Thanks for taking the time to point that out.

(8,434 posts)I did a quick skim just before I had to log off.
However, I stand by my feeling that this is a strong red district, possibly the reddest in the whole state. While I'm not lobbying for any Republicans I think a primary is likely to rid us of Cantor before a Dem will.
2010 VA went almost entirely red. Cantor was unopposed.
I'll vote Dem as always, but I don't hold out much hope until redistricting by Dems at some point in the future.

(10,942 posts)and drive home the point why he is better for the district than Cantor. My guess is that Powell is a bluedog type, probaly a little right of center. Although I am to the left of that type, my view is that if they come with rational policies, they will be effective leaders of the country. The fact that Powell has chosen to be a democrat gives me hope that he cares more about the country than his political success, in the district that he is in and being ex-military, it would have been much easier for him to run as a republican.

(1,553 posts)but on the votes that really matter they usually come through. They shy away from anti-war votes, but when it's a major reform they tend to be in line (if they understand it). You can't let them lead or they will go the way of Jim Wright and Bob Packwood, but when it comes to winning a swing district nobody does it better.

That's a fine thing for anyone to be doing and, sure I'd like to see Cantor sent back under whatever rock he crawled out from beneath.
But who cares what a statewide poll says about Cantor?
Are the voters in VA-07 supposed to care what folks in NoVa think?

I get that O'D benefited from the greater propensity of Repub. voters to turn out in off years. But he still has a pretty high approval rating from people in general--and his ads recently essentially claim credit for Warner and Kaine work, and the benefits of stimulus money sent to VA.
VA voters do need to wise up.

(1,362 posts)You have no response so I'll tell you 1 last time, they are repukes and they are cited in the article. I hope the (D) candidate wins in Virginia's 7th district but he doesn't stand a chance in repukeville, just look at their voting records:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia%27s_7th_congressional_district
Any (D) candidate in that area is faced with lying, hypocritical and mentally ill "moderates and independents" whom are really (R)s who will vote for any (R) regardless of what they tell some pollsters or (D) candidates. That's the way repukes act and it's clearly demonstrated in their voting records.

And they will VOTE for another R given the opportunity, because them socialists communists want to spend their money and do some wealth distribution... or something like that.
Ideology... it is strong. Eric will go on to make millions as a lobbyist though. Perhaps come back to run for Preznit.

I'm glad you could take this opportunity to bash the state that I live in and the family and friends I have here. I feel so much better now.
It's fucked up here. There is no doubt about that. VA has a lot of really stupid, arrogant, ignorant, and otherwise fucked up things happening here. The running joke among my peers is "we are the other Texas." It's a stupid joke that insults both states.
Yet we turned blue for the first time in 44 years to help elect Obama for President in 2008. That's right. This backwards redneck #%$^#*$ state turned blue for a change.
2010 didn't turn out so well for us, but we Dems in VA and on DU are still here! We're still fighting!
However, I want to extend my thanks to you for bashing my home, my family, and my friends in VA. Maybe we should just give up?

(36,974 posts)Poll: Obama ahead of Romney in Virginia
(CNN) - As President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney campaign in Virginia this week, a new poll shows the president with a seven point advantage over his likely opponent in the Commonwealth.
Fifty-one percent of voters said they would vote for the president if the election were held today, while 44% said Romney, according to the Washington Post poll released Thursday.

(13,923 posts)they go to the polls and chose someone else. Till then, its a meaningless number. If they reject Cantor, but reject any Dem even more, its still a loss. If they reject cantor now, but vote for him in November, its still a loss. If they reject cantor, but the people controlling the vote counting announce Cantor the winner in November, its still a loss that will go unchallenged by any Democrat in power. If the state hates him, but his own district still elects him, its still a loss.
Till it turns into action, it means nothing.
