Gotta love the freedoms they students get at Liberty University....NOT!!!!
Liberty Students Would Have Been Fined If They Skipped Ted Cruz's Speech
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) delivered his first official 2016 presidential campaign speech Monday during a convocation ceremony at Liberty University, a religious institution in Lynchburg, Virginia.
The room was packed for Cruz's speech, but the crowd wasn't all there just to applaud the senator's big announcement, which was first shared on Twitter. Some of the students who witnessed the launch of Cruz's 2016 presidential campaign were, in the words of Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch, only in attendance so they wouldnt get fined.
Convocation is a mandatory Monday, Wednesday and Friday event for Liberty students -- and they are penalized with fines if they skip an assembly.
I guess the Rand Paul supporters were not too keen to be forced to attend and let it be known!

(82,849 posts)Mandatory convocation is a feature that Liberty students (or more likely, their parents) want, rather than a problem to be addressed. It would be interesting to see a Venn Diagram of the universes of Liberty University parents who were unhinged over the notion of President Obama making a televised address to the nation's students, and those parents who are just fine with mandatory attendance at Senator Cruz's political rally. "Hey, there's only one circle on this Venn Diagram!"

(21,657 posts)the convocation is a required attendance event so they knew they would get a crowd this way. Otherwise it would have been him, a tumbleweed and this lady:

(750 posts)Sort of the same feeling all of America had when Bush handed over the screwed up treasury. It was about the same type of captured audience, only the tax payer didnt have to go to a convocation ceremony.
The media in breaking news was the spin cycle in ugly politics, the new age convocation ceremony of breaking news.
Young men and women of Liberty University are dammed if they do or dammed if they dont. I never had any respect for that University System and likely many more will not now. A shadow is now cast on the whole system.
In wide open conflict of the first amendment to make the arrangement around a Christian theme is similar to a person that links the name of Jesus to a nick name of Chuy. Cruz or Chuy they are both the same.
This action is the current fundamental Republican philosophy, illustrating what the Republican Cruz leadership will be.
All this accompanied by a very denigrating media that knows this distinction is persecution in the mental science. Moreover, it is not natural knowledge, but the strict sense of how expression to study the phenomena in nature now is manifest by political force.
These Republicans reveal the art of sequester again rather than reveal the art of Liberty
