(35,703 posts)Whacking the license plate of a stopped car is not going to set off the airbags no matter how hard the lady swings the purse.

(8,812 posts)We need to learn to distinguish news from ads and real events from faked ones.
It appalls me how many people become unwitting viral marketers for commercials, especially for certain alleged "flash mobs" that obviously required sophisticated micing and multiple camera setups. I think "reality TV" (sic) has been a major cause of this decline.
Critical thinking may not be dead, but it's definitely dying.

(8,854 posts)...so maybe I'm missing something. Was the driver honking unnecessarily at the old women? Was he yelling at her for some reason? If this had been a real incident, I don't understand why her behavior would be considered funny unless the driver was being obnoxious to her.

Without audio I was missing that context.

(111,407 posts)As for deploying the airbag, a hard swing on a bag full of heavy items and a lucky landing right at the accelerometer could deploy the airbag, especially on an older car in which they hadn't been set as well as they are now. They'd deploy in parking lot fender benders when they first came out.
If she had bricks in that thing, maybe, if it was that one shot in a billion to an 80s sports car.
A large part of me hopes the footage is genuine and IKEA wisely bought it to use in a commercial. Old bag power! Yeah!
And no, kids, we can't walk any faster. With age, the nervous system conduction gets slower as muscles waste away. Getting around without a cane or walker is a great achievement.

(2,382 posts)It's just a really funny bit. Anyone with the brains of a potted knows it was staged. Just laugh and let it go. There are issues far more deserving of outrage.

If it's not clear what is being marketed, how are people unwitting viral marketers?
