I wish I was black so I could get a free pass all the time and pull the race card.
#stevie4spiderman Answer:
Ill tell you what. On behalf of all black Americans, Im willing to make a trade. If we get to be paid 30% more on average, be in charge of almost all Fortune 500 companies, have the next forty-three Presidents in a row be black, have 90% of auditions in Hollywood be exclusive to black actors, receive 14% more of the total scholarship funding than our portion of the population, do and deal drugs at higher rates but be arrested less, not be killed every twenty-eight hours by the police, have our literature and history be almost exclusively the source of all compulsory education curriculums, be chosen for jobs if we have felony convictions over you even if your record is clean, be held as the standard of beauty worldwide, and hold a disproportionate amount of the countrys wealth, you can have the race card. If we can legitimately switch places, you can pull the race card every day and say the n-word eighty times on a megaphone every night before you go to sleep.

(53,949 posts)You can have all obstacles blacks have to confront in America but all of them would become obstacles for whites.
How about that?

(2,065 posts)I think the person responding does get to stay black but with the advantages of a white person. And the white person whining for a race card stays white but gets the race card in place of all the advantages of being white.

(53,661 posts)And that's a pretty damn sad commentary on what one cannot help but see unless one is wearing nuke resistant sunglasses to blind them to the privilege given at birth.
In the land where many of us were taught by logic we should all be Equal, and that our nation was to work to perfect that notion, and expand it, not resist it.
But hell, what do I know...

(6,891 posts)What would be better would be a society without races. Race is a biological myth and a sad social reality. We don't control biology. We just think we do. Hell, we can't even pick our biological parents. But we sure as hell can create any kind of society we are determined to make. My vote is for one without races.

(231 posts)I've had a handicapped parking pass for about a month, so now I am paying attention:
Major supermarket: no handicapped assigned parking places within 5-6 rows of the entrance
Medium supermarket: two spaces, always filled.
Another branch of medium supermarket: 5 or 6 spaces, about a 25% chance one of them is open.

(17,997 posts)I never even watch the show but I had actually mentioned that scene in one of the posts honoring Mr. Mays. So I decided to turn the show on just to see if just maybe. .. And there he was.
Terrible recording, I know. But glad you liked it

(17,997 posts)Arrested less often and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole less often.
A majority of the juvenile defendants were African American (62%). The rest of the sample was made up of Caucasian (20%), Latino (16%) and other (2%). At time of arrest almost 40% of the juveniles were ages 1718, with 30.7% ages 1617, 19.2% ages 1516, 6.8% ages 1415, and 0.3% less than 14 years of age
Where do I find the person that said that? I think I would like to slap him into the middle of a century ago. Right after he trades place with someone.

(24,544 posts)I've never see that movie though I have heard about it. That is one HELL of a way to turn the tables around.
And the fact that I have heard people make those exact same comments/arguments RECENTLY about indigenous Australians (another massively oppressed group that has endured much trauma at the hands of mainstream white society) makes it that much more ironic.
BumRushDaShow
(129,800 posts)although panned by critics (not surprising). In essence, the universe of the film was an almost literal reverse of our current environment, with tweaks to allow for cultural differences. I haven't watched it in a long time but one of the scenes that stands out (if I'm remembering it correctly) was the main character's (Travolta's character) son watching TV and seeing nothing but blacks in the programs or commercials and his pretending to be the (black) superhero.
Seems the whole thing is posted on youtube and if you have chance, give it a viewing. It's far far from perfect (aside from Belafonte's performance) but there are a lot of subtle things going on in the presentation of images that seem to have been lost (unintentionally or more likely, intentionally) on the critics, that keenly illustrate what many of us talk about regarding the majority's control of the narrative and POV, and that apparently scared the hell of them. It could probably be remade to tighten it up, but I expect trying to do so would be too threatening to the power structure.

(22,336 posts)It's called Noughts and Crosses (in the US I think it was published as Black and White.) What's interesting is that, with the racial switch being the main change between that and the current and historical discrimination in the US (and the UK where it was written and published, though many of the historic examples of racism are borrowed from the US,) it's considered a dystopian novel.

(24,544 posts)Out of all the things, I think this is one of the ones that pisses most black people I know off more than anything else.
Even DEEP in the hood, it's white people that buy and use drugs more but yet, when the face of Crime in America comes up, it is always as black as possible. And not just with drug using and selling -- with EVERYTHING.

it's no wonder that white people have a hard time reigning in their jealousy.
I just wish they'd check their black envy at the door. The whining is so far beyond ignorant, it has become flat out embarrassing.

(254 posts)...and we are all out of the African continent...so what difference does it make what skin color is today? I think it shouldn't even be an issue. But that's not the world we live in and there is a lot of work to do to change this situation. I'm 60 and don't expect to see a lot of changes in that direction in my life time. Best wishes for future generations to get this problem of race behind the human condition.

'.... I wish I was black so I could get a free pass all the time and pull the race card.'
He forgot to add:
'.... assuming I lived long enough, and didn't have to face a 'life or death' situation, such as being addressed in conversation by a melanin-challenged policeman', though unarmed and going about my lawful business.'
Imagine if an albino copper came across a Klu Klux Klanner:
'Stop right where you are, you dirty g..dd..ed SOB! You **** darkies haven taken over the g..dd..ed country. (Calling out to a colleague: 'Hey come and have a look at this 'schwarzer, posing as a whiter than white, white guy!' Empty your pockets! etc, etc. Don't bother! Bang! Bang!
I'm sure I do a grave injustice to people who suffer from albinism, comparing them to their more swarthy brothers and sisters, but you get the idea...
Incidentally, on a more serious note, there are two basic reasons for the disparity between the technological development of various peoples, that has nothing to do with a disparity in native intelligence, which is entirely mythical.
The main one is: INTEREST: The Mayan Indians were doing amazing things, such as advanced mathematics, calculating calendars, inventing the concept of zero a thousand years before the rest of the world (the Arabs, and, I believe, the Indo-Europeans, before them), inventing a written language, building cities, while we were running around, daubed in wode. The video at this link gives a good summary:
http://www.history.com/topics/maya
The point is that, before even the Middle Ages, in that wonderfully poetic, American expression, they 'checked out'! Lost interest.
The other basic reason is that, while other religions believed that the material world was largely illusory, Christians believed that it could be increasingly understood by the use of our human reason and logic, because they believed in a rational God; that Nature was subject to laws, because they believed in a divine Law-Maker. Other civilizations, such as the Chinese, were themselves, in some ways, extremely enlightened, and made great sporadic breakthroughs, from time to time, such as printing, but it was never a continuous ongoing process with other civilizations.
The missionary contacts of the Jesuit priest, Matteo Ricci with the Mandarins of China, and Ricci's correlation of much of the wisdom of Confucianism, encouraged the former to investigate Christianity - especially, when they were shown examples of our technology. recently, I read history repeating itself to some extent, although the Chinese are extremely advanced technologically, today. A Chinese politician was suggesting that Christianity might be beneficial to the country, on the basis, I believe, of that curiously relentless, technological progress of the West - even post-Christian. Far from holding science back, the truth quite the reverse.
As regards the intellectual brilliance of the Jews, they were writing the continuous history of their people, long before any other people, and were a cohesive bunch in Old Testament times, due to their submission, albeit erratic, to the Judaeo-Christian God, Yahweh. The law of God handed down to them by Moses included commands that could be construed as the first glimmer of a welfare-state: leaving the gleanings from the harvest, the grapes that had fallen to the ground - in short, leaving this and that for the stranger, the wayfarer, the poor man.
But enough of my missionary zeal, as this is not the most welcoming forum for formal Christian catechesis! I hope some of you find it interesting though.
