That said, there are much better reasons to criticize Ann Romney, such as her politics or her choice in husbands.

(14,881 posts)That may or may not be due to teevee. Looked again...it's the mucky, greenish "dirty" yellow. I've seen horse snots that color when the horses were very sick.

He's drinking the Kool Aid that his advisers are encouraging: Ann is your secret weapon!
Most Americans would look at that shirt and say WTF...
gateley
(62,683 posts)and that's the impression I'm sticking with!
You know when people first fall in love and their eyes light up when their loved one walks into the room? That's how it appeared to me.
I could be wrong, and it doesn't really matter, but you'll never disabuse me of that idea. Until he files for divorce.

(63,926 posts)I hope I'm wrong and you're right. And I truly don't feel animosity against him for loving his wife. Hell, I don't even know the man...except for his politics...

I'm jaded, too, and had I not seen it, I wouldn't be buying it, either. But I always feel compelled to toss that into a thread about him and her for some reason.

(47,741 posts)for his wife does seem genuine. Of course, I've seen pictures of him when he was young and he was really a gawky dork and its possible she was the only pretty girl who would go out with him. So to me that adoring look seems to say, "I can't believe SHE is with me".

(24,853 posts)instead of dogs on the roofs of cars, rockers who pissed their pants and the cost of a blouse, MAYBE President Obama would be so far ahead in the current polls that we could call the election off and deem him President by Proclamation.
But noooooo; Let's focus on things that could FUCKING NEVER influence the coming General Election... Let's focus on whose Flying Spaghetti Monster is more acceptable... Mitt's or Barack's. Let's focus on idiotic things, PETTY things... Yeah... THAT'S the ticket!
Deficit? Meh, Mitt put his dog on the roof of his car! Unnecessary war? Fuck that, Ted Nugent pissed his pants! Keeping the Senate and winning back the House? BORRRRRING... Supreme Court? Yawn...
If I were PBO's David Axelrod, I'd give you the job of digging through Republican trash looking for receipts for porn at the local Hollywood Video store. It seems to be what you'd be best at.

Yes, the media focuses on crap like dogs on cars and Ted Nugent; stuff that probably doesn't help us. BUT, when they talk about the RMoney's extravagant spending, overseas bank accounts, missing tax returns, and general excess, we need to thank them. These are pocketbook issues that everyone can understand.

(75,480 posts)I wonder where it was manufactured? If in some third world country sweatshop, I'll bet the Reed Krakoff Bird people paid $1 for it to be made. Really nice mark-up. Maybe the fabric, silk, was a little more but I doubt it cost more than $15 to manufacture. Frankly, I have nothing against businesses profiting from filthy rich people. It's the only way to make them part with their cash.

(48,955 posts)Someone asked if a gift (ick - whole other story if that is the case), I have to ask if she has a personal shopper (as many very wealthy do.) Surely she didn't know how much it cost - and how easily identifiable it was (per to determine cost) and the message it sends.
My entire career has been in academics or in nonprofits. While no longer the case, there have been times when this cost would have been more than my after tax income for a month. I have lived on that amount (all costs) for more than a month. And while I have lived on the financial edge, I know that others live on a riskier financial edge.
Or perhaps she thinks that middle income and lower income folks really should face further financial insecurity so that she can buy more 1K dollar shirts (per Mitt's support of the Ryan plan that on the one hand slashes safety net programs for those most in need, while at the same time giving even more tax breaks to wealthy individuals and corporations.
I start this post, because I have no sense of this woman, per who she is, so it doesn't feel fair to cast aspersions to intent. My generous view, is that she had no idea, and wasn't sending a big middle finger salute to much of America. That is due to my personal aversion to attacking the family members of politicians. That said - once a story is covered, the excuse works one time. After that, such exhibits show contempt.

(23,272 posts)The clothing expectations are such bullshit: roll the sleeves up or down? Wear the bathing suit and go swimming (or sailboating) and get crucified? Get a famous designer to do your inaugural gown and it's a flop. Get your haircut at the expensive salon you trust or go to Great Clips and let the newbie stylist butcher your hair for a few weeks of photo ops....
I guess it's because I am NOT a fashionista that I hate seeing anyone pilloried over their clothing choices: expensive or not. Michelle Obama now wears a LOT of pricey stuff.

(4,840 posts)I wonder how much she spends on formal wear?
Can you imagine Ann Romney running up a huge tab as first lady with all those functions? I can.
GoCubsGo
(32,100 posts)A lot of stuff the First Ladies wear is either given or loaned to them by designers. It's how they get attention to their designs. I'm willing to bet that's how Michelle got those expensive shoes that folks upthread are criticizing. IIRC, she had just been to Paris not long before those things showed up on her feet. Giving Michelle Obama a pair of $500 shoes is a cheaper way to advertise them than paying an ad agency.
Shankapotomus
(4,840 posts)We're talking about a T-shirt here, not formal wear.
Wearing a $990 dollar T-shirt, whether purchased with your own money or given as a gift, seems to me to be the height of extravagance. (SELLING a $990 T-shirt is disgusting in and of itself so could wearing one be any less revolting?). It harkens back to the days in America when the poor panhandled on the street and the rich payed for the extravagance of dining on horseback. It's a totally unnessessary indulgence.
How about buying a regular t-shirt and giving the rest of the money to a good cause? Disgusting.
GoCubsGo
(32,100 posts)My point is that if she were First Lady, she might not be running up the huge tab you asked us to imagine. I guess I was not clear about that. I'm not trying to defend her by any means. I'm just pointing out that things are different when it comes to how the First Lady obtains many of her expensive clothing items. She is not First Lady now, so yes, everything you say is right about her.

Nice try. Michelle Obama doesn't walk around wearing $1,000 t-shirts. If she did, we would have heard about it, and we would never hear the end of it. Michelle Obama has been complimented for the cheap price tags of much of her clothing. Ann Romney wearing a $1,000 t-shirt, is yet more proof of how out of touch her, and robot Willard are.
