Yanks say they fired part-time worker in Schilling flap
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - The New York Yankees say they have fired a part-time ticker seller accused by Curt Schilling of making offensive comments on Twitter about the daughter of the former Boston pitcher.
Schilling congratulated his daughter on Twitter last week after she was accepted into Salve Regina University, where she'll play softball next year. Multiple people posted vulgar and sexually explicit comments about her.
Schilling wrote on his blog Sunday that he was astounded by the ignorance and lack of morals. He reposted tweets and identified some of the people responsible, pointing them out to employers and other organizations he believed they are affiliated with.
Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo said said Tuesday the team has "zero tolerance for anything like this. We've terminated him."
The Twitter account linked to the former Yankees employee has been deactivated.

(14,400 posts)epic takedown of these scumbags. It's nice to see the occasional troll face some real life consequences for their actions.

(7,820 posts)Due to this, people are talking about online harassment, and the things some men think it's ok to say to and about women (including death and rape threats) when they think they're anonymous and there are no consequences. I'll take it. He can probably reach people those who have been aware of this issue couldn't

(7,820 posts)He may be harder for some to dismiss as just a lefty liberal feminist. He can (and has) said "Look, I've been a jock my whole life. I get the culture. But this stuff? This is way out of bounds. And there should be consequences"
It would be nice if these rwer were capable of empathy before it had to happen to them or their loved ones, but hey, if it gets people talking and thinking, I think that's probably good.

(27,461 posts)this isn't about people abusing women online, it's about people abusing the daughter of a famous powerful person.

(7,820 posts)I do think it's leading to some larger discussions, and will stay hopeful about that. And yes, it sounds like the attacks on his daughter were very gender specific. Threatening and attacking women online has become a huge problem (gamer gate, for example) We've had issues right here on DU. Whatever you think of Curt Schilling or his daughter (Or Brianna Wu, or someone who happens to post something you don't like on a message board) rape threats, death threats, general abuse for daring to enter arenas usually dominated by men- is about abuse of women and misogyny. The attacks on Schilling's daughter came after a congratulatory tweet by him to her for being accepted to and getting a scholarship to play softball. Turned out a lot of the perpetrators were college athletes.

(100,139 posts)And I seriously hope that, while Twitter death and rape threats will never go away, this will make people think twice about what they post.
