Boren Wastes No Time Responding at OU

Statement:

To those who have misused their free speech in such a reprehensible way, I have a message for you. You are disgraceful. You have violated all that we stand for. You should not have the privilege of calling yourselves “Sooners.” Real Sooners are not racist. Real Sooners are not bigots. Real Sooners believe in equal opportunity. Real Sooners treat all people with respect. Real Sooners love each other and take care of each other like family members.

Effective immediately, all ties and affiliations between this University and the local SAE chapter are hereby severed. I direct that the house be closed and that members will remove their personal belongings from the house by midnight tomorrow. Those needing to make special arrangements for possessions shall contact the Dean of Students.

All of us will redouble our efforts to create the strongest sense of family and community. We vow that we will be an example to the entire country of how to deal with this issue. There must be zero tolerance for racism everywhere in our nation.

He said the university would not help them find alternative housing. They wouldn't need alternative housing if they were leaving.

The fraternity has been kicked out of the university. Members of the fraternity have not. That would take considerable more effort. Need to identify the individual members involved, look into the legal ramifications, refund tuition, etc.

While the fraternity can be, and was, kicked out with the stroke of a pen.

He said that as long as he is OU's president, this fraternity will never be allowed here. Also, no help will be given to help these members find alternative housing. The only assistance that might be given is bus money to get out of town! I love him. He's been great for OU.

These kids have the right to free speech, but they all need their mouths washed out with soap. Shameful behavior. I'm glad the frat house has been shut down.

The kids have the right to say what they want, but the university does not have to recognize their fraternity as a part of the university or permit university students to live there.

I'd bet everything I own that song is being sung at every SAE house in the nation.

The OK boys didn't just make it up yesterday. They all knew the words -- I bet it was taught to them as part of their initiation.

The national SAE organization is just pretending to be shocked because the song became public, imho.

Good for Boren. His response was appropriately strong and angry.

I was in a sorority years ago. Many years ... At any rate the houses were fairly segregated. There are some houses that are mostly white, mostly Jewish, some traditionally African-American (both sororities and fraternities are segregated this way). It may be more mixed now.

Songs - there are formal song books with songs that go way back (you can order the piano music etc), and there are also "fun" songs for bus rides and such. My guess is that they were traveling to an out of town athletic event.
