Could Sports Entertainer be Jon's next career move?

(12,778 posts)but John Stewart was great on RAW. He took it seriously and didn't act like he was better than all those "rasslers." Also, it was great exposure for Seth Rollins, a deserving and talented young star, going into WrestleMania.

(33,688 posts)Great worker and excellent in-ring storyteller. Charisma to burn and a good talker, though not as good on the mic as Dean Ambrose, but then who is?

(12,778 posts)Of the former Shield members, I saw them like this: Rollins is the best in-ring worker. Reigns is the muscle man, lots of charisma, but still very green. Ambrose is the most complete talented package of the three. While he was still working in developmental down in Florida, I said that he was the future of wrestling. That was after seeing him work against William Regal.

(33,688 posts)Closest thing to Shawn Michaels (IMO, the GOAT) that I've seen. The wrestling equivalent of a five-tool player in baseball, he does it all.

(5,169 posts)Professional Comedy and Professional Wrestling are pretty closely related.

(12,778 posts)Seeing Seth Rollins show up on the Daily Show was pretty cool too. Jon Stewart seems like someone who understands that pro wrestling is a demanding profession that requires talent and dedication for one to succeed. Like I said, he doesn't seem like the type that thinks he's better than all the "rasslers."

(12,778 posts)slapping the piss out of Stossel if he asked if wrestling was fake. Interesting since only a few years later, he went out of his way to let everyone know it was "fake" just to get out from under state athletic commissions and safe a few bucks on the commission taxes. Now McMahon won't even call it wrestling; it's always "sports entertainment" to him. That term is particularly galling to someone like me who grew up on Mid-South pro wrestling.

(65,616 posts)Grew up in Houston watching WCCW as a kid. Then again even as a child, I always thought McMahon was a sleazy business man. I don't know if it was part of his act, but it stuck with me all my life.

(12,778 posts)It was when the Von Erichs had withdrawn from the NWA and were trying to expand. They brought a spot show to my hometown in NE Oklahoma. WCCW's best days were already in the past, unfortunately.

(5,169 posts)WWE was starting to get gigantic, but the WCCW talent base was amazing. Von Erichs, Freebirds, Bruiser Brody, Chris Adams, Missing Link, Iceman Parsons, Gino Hernandez, Abdulah the Butcher, The Great Kabuki, Skandor Akbar, and more!
The performers and writers in WWE should be assigned to watch about 5 to 10 hours of classic era WCCW a week until they "get it".

(12,778 posts)I even have "Big Daddy" King Kong Bundy with hair! That's quite a sight, as by the time he made it down here to Mid-South he was already bald.

Yes, absolutely. You should really be in on some of the deep conversations my best friend and I have. We're both thirty-year fans.

(33,688 posts)because he is. He's a carny huckster down to the marrow of his bones.

(4,138 posts)He has a history of shady dealings all the way back to when he expanded the WWF from an northeastern to national promotion (and when his only public face was as a commentator). Once the internet opened up a lot of the inner workings of the wrestling business to the fandom, he realized that playing a slightly exaggerated version of himself would be a good story angle, so he ran with it.
NaturalHigh
(12,778 posts)If you've read much on Vince, you know that his shady dealings include some downright criminal acts. I give him credit for creativity and hard work, but he's a really sleazy person.

(4,138 posts)I wasn't trying to sugarcoat it, just making the point that his on camera persona doesn't seem that far removed from his actual person.

(2,952 posts)....great story telling in the early 80's! The (then) WWF and WCW robbed them both of all their biggest stars...JYD, Dibiase, the undertaker, the Fabulous Freebirds, Kerry Von-Erich, Mick foley....
The second David Von Erich memorial show drew 65,000 people in the mid 80s...the largest wrestling crowd until Wrestlmania 4 a few years later.
Anyone remember the old "Houston Wrestling" hosted by Paul Boesch? Another underrated show....Eddie Guerreo got his start there, as did Tully Blanchard and many others

(12,778 posts)We didn't get it in my area, but Watts showed a lot of highlights on his show, as did Joe Blanchard on his Southwest show.
David Von Erich would have made a great NWA champion. He had worked in other areas as a heel, so he could have filled the role of a touring champion whose job it was to make the local heroes look good. Kerry Von Erich...well, he was a nice guy, and I'm glad he got a short title reign. He just wasn't the all-around worker that David was.

(2,952 posts)He was the prototype to what Steve Austin would become a decade later. Kerry wasn't as talented as his big brother but was still a decent worker. Kevin was very talented too. Very tragic story with them.
I had a chance to see the first two DVE memorial Shows back in the 80's...I even had ringside seats to the second one....I got into a chest poking obscenity laced conversation with Michael Hayes prior to his match! He is a lot bigger in person than on TV! Also sat next to twisted sister! Great memories!

(12,778 posts)I was lucky enough to see Kamala and Andre the first time they wrestled each other in Tulsa, and that was the very first event I attended! Is it any wonder I was hooked?
Stone Cold may very well be my favorite of all time, but I maintain that David was actually a better in-ring worker. It's interesting to wonder what might have happened if David had lived and gone to the WWF in the 80s. Hogan vs. David might well have been bigger than Hogan and Andre if booked correctly.

(2,952 posts)It was good to grow up 90 minutes from Dallas, WCCWs home, and an hour from Shreveport La, where mid south sponsored a great many of their events....we always had one or the other sponsoring shows locally. I don't remember any girl I ever dated NOT having a poster of Kerry or Kevin somewhere on her wall!
Kerry was tailor made for the WWE. McMahon has an affinity for big muscled up wrestlers. David would have been better in WCW, as they tended to have a lot more diversity in the world champs....IE: Ron Simmons was WCW champ, "Farouq" in the WWE made it to tag team champ...it was all about Hogans 24" pythons and mic work that made him famous...he did put wrestling on the national map though. That being said, DVE could've worked circles around him...
I get into discussions with my buddy's about who was the best modern wrestler ever....I will Go with Ric Flair for a couple of reasons..
1) he wrestled with a seriously damaged spine for 40+ years, including those classics with Ricky Steamboat
2) even In his 60s he was entertaining
3) when any wrestler takes a chop across their chest what does the audience do? WOOOOOOOO!!! Lol
NaturalHigh
(12,778 posts)but they could have made a ton of money together. Imagine David getting Orndorff's two big runs with Hogan.

(12,778 posts)I think this was just a short-time deal for Stewart. I can't see the WWE spending big money to put him under a new contract since the company has had some financial problems for the past year.

(39,343 posts)Wrestling is joke. Unlike back in the 80's, they don't even play fight anymore. It's all obscenity laced screaming.
Ric Flair, now that was wrestling.

(12,778 posts)when The Shield and Daniel Bryan were getting pushed. It's not nearly as fun since The Shield broke up and Daniel Bryan had to sit out for ten months, but like every other wrestling addict I struggle to maintain some hope.
