http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-daylight-saving-time-8-things-to-know-20150306-htmlstory.html"Daylight saving time, a change in the standard time designed to conserve energy and making better use of daylight, officially begins Sunday. This means at 2 a.m., clocks should be set one hour ahead. Daylight saving time official ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, and that's when clocks will "fall back" an hour."

(14,691 posts)When I was a child and it came time to turn the clocks ahead I always thought that meant I'd be getting out of school early. But NOOOO! I was still stuck in there till 3:00 p.m. It's the same 24 hours. I still don't see that we're saving anything, especially these days with all our gazillion electronic gadgets that didn't exist when DST was first instituted. AND I HATE LOSING THAT HOUR!

(111,417 posts)Honestly, it does save energy and it's great for those of us who aren't morning people.
I always get depressed when the clocks go back to ST. It's like going into a dark tunnel for 4 months.

(111,417 posts)instead of going to work and returning from work in the dark. It would be a distinct advantage there.
Many of us are not happy, peppy morning people and DST year round would be a gift to us.
It would likely decrease the incidence of SAD by exposing people to sunlight in the evening hours.
And just think, no more time changes.
Plus, the kiddies would get more outdoor playtime after school, it's good for them and for Mom's sanity. The Valium and booze bills would decrease.

(16,204 posts)Most people are sleeping at 4 AM EST in the summer, yet the sun is up. So we make that 5 AM EDT, and add that hour of light onto the end of the day.

(9,688 posts)It's the single stupidest thing we do as a civilization. And, also only about 40-50% of countries observe DST, and, even among those who do, start and stop dates vary. Why add this extra confusion and stress to an already stressed-out society?
And, no, it does NOT save energy. Recent studies showed absolutely no difference in energy use with or without DST.

(6,843 posts)Nothing prevents YOU from going to bed an hour earlier! LOL
Since you like to stay up late, the world should revolve around YOUR needs/wants?

(111,417 posts)Nothing is more self indulgent than ignorance.
The fact is that a good friend gets up at the same time in both time systems but prefers DST because it gives her an extra hour of clock time in the morning when she's sharpest to get things done.

He had the right idea about a lot of things.
Let's do that again!
