Coming of age in the late 70's allowed me to witness firsthand as both the Democratic Party and my Nation appeared to be unraveling before my (still a child's) eyes. Since then I've seen this country fall under a spell of selfishness, fear, envy and desperation as we learned to blame others for our problems instead of realizing that we're strongest when we pull together.
Somewhere along the way I started watching documentaries and reading about Bobby Kennedy. I know he wasn't a saint. Many times he wasn't even a good man but he believed we could be something much greater, better than we have managed to become. I believe that Bobby could have united us with his vision, compassion, leadership, perseverance and faith.
Bobby was taken away from us, though, and I can't help but feel that the Democratic Party has been just stumbling along for all these years. We have had some great leaders. Ted Kennedy and Paul Wellstone. I sincerely look forward to the return of Russ Feingold to the Senate. Bobby was our icon, though, and his death left an un-fillable void just when we so desperately needed him.
It may just be my humble opinion, but I believe that many of us feel that Elizabeth Warren can be the leader that Bobby was. I trust her. I will follow her lead, will support her in all she does and I believe she would make a wonderful President of the United States. Except that she's not running.
In November 2016 I will cast my vote for whoever is the Democratic nominee, probably Hillary. During the primaries I will steadfastly support Bernie Sanders because I believe he is an honorable man who had better ideas, more conviction and integrity than Hillary Clinton. I will do whatever I can to force Hillary to adopt at least the façade of a progressive stance. All the while I will wish that Elizabeth Warren would run. And in my heart I'll miss Bobby and what might have been.
