Oregon middle school removes students' gay-tolerance banners after parent complains

Source: KPTV

BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) - Students at Five Oaks Middle School who put up banners with messages that promote tolerance of gay students are upset after the school's principal took them down.

... A parent who wished to remain anonymous said he emailed the principal to complain about the signs, which he felt were inappropriate.

The parent said the school isn't open to other beliefs and ways of life, such as celebrating Christmas, so this sign shouldn't be allowed either.

Mina Cash-Valdez is part of the school's gay-straight alliance and helped put up the signs. Cash-Valdez said she doesn't think being gay should be compared to celebrating a holiday, and she's upset the signs were taken down.

Celebrating Christmas is not the same as discouraging bigotry.

Which, btw, isn't that one of the things Christ was about - equality, kindness & love?

Good fucking grief!

It's the job of the administrators to protect students and teachers from them.

This principal gets an "F," he didn't do his job, and ought to reprimanded for caving into the demands of an asshole parent who is a bigot and a bully.

parent has to express their bigotry, hatefulness, intolerance and flawed logic using Christmas as a wedge tool. So, the bigot takes precedence.

it will be to point out ONE parent, who chooses Not to face the public/kids they have affected...Does NOT "get to call the shots" all by his/her big self".

There is great value in what these kids are doing...activism, standing up and EDUCATING others regardless of issue!
The "parent" is rather biased/narrow minded ... What message to the kids does That send when the school itself tolerates (agrees with) "Bigoted Discomfort"?

and uses Christmas as an excuse.....wtf.

Wtf does Christmas have to do with that. I guess using that is just as good an excuse for bigotry as any.
