...some time ago ( I heard 1992 but I haven't been able to confirm it), there was a similar incident where the plane slipped into the river. Pilot, co-pilot and several passengers died up front.
So they built a berm. They could stop a full powered push into the river but the idea was that the berm would prevent a plan from slipping off the end of the runway and gaining momentum down that hill into the river.
And that's exactly what happened today. Instead of the nose slipping down and the plane turning into a sled, it pushed up and the whole thing came to a stop.
