Who knew - Lady Gaga can sing!!! I hope this doesn't ruin her pop music career - being able to sing

happened to walk through the room while my significant other was watching the Oscars and I was floored to hear Lady Gaga singing and she really has a voice. She was singing songs from the Sound of Music. Her singing was, dare I say it: pretty!

Jesus! I hope this doesn't ruin her pop music career!

Didn't realize it was her until I sat down and actually watched. She is such a relief - she hits the notes!!! I was beginning to wonder if anyone even cares about that anymore.

But with her recent appearances with Tony Bennett, the Grammy's, the Stevie Wonder tribute and now the Oscars, she's reaching a broader audience and those folks are discovering her "talent".

So I have never watched the movie. Saw the musical in Philly, at the Schubert, in 1963. Winced when Florence Henderson was wheeled out on a roller-skated mountain peak, screaming "The heeeeeels are aliiiiive" in a key I just can't listen to.
But I loved Lady Gaga's voice, lower register, perfect.

Being the very talented singer-songwriter she was before she became famous:

That said, I have heard some songs, and she always seems to me to be doing a poor Madonna impression in her singing and songs.

When I heard she was going to sing, I continued to watch.
I saw her on Idol once singing while floating over the piano and playing it. It was impressive.
What she did at the Oscars was very smart. She already had a name, so she showed her talent and will have staying power. I did not know Julie Andrews possessed such vast octave levels. That alone would spur Lady Gaga to show her stuff... bravo!

I knew she was quite talented. I ignored the weird costumes and knew she could write a well crafted pop song.
She does have excellent chops. I like Born This Way and Bad Romance.

I'm glad people listened to her singing straight Broadway music and wearing a respectable dress, so the visuals didn't overwhelm the audio.

She has a much better voice than Madonna has ever thought about having.

Credentials: I took many years of piano and violin studying classical and also took 2 years of voice lessons and learned to sing opera in French, German and Italian. Found out I was a mezzo-soprano.

There are a few pop singers out there with really good voices. Celine Dion (except for that crappy Titanic song), Cyndi Lauper, Cher.
Adele has a good voice but her songs are not terribly imaginative.

Just listen to the music and don't watch the video, she sounds really good in these songs, not only are the songs top notch, but she sings really well in them too.
