General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThink about the stupidest conservative you personally know, like a family member or Facebook friend.
You know, the one who's always forwarding or posting the fake news stories and quotes that are easily debunked within a minute's internet search. The one who has a fetish about the military but has never served a day in his or her life. The one who constantly talks about what "the founding fathers" want. The one who constantly posts pictures of the American flag, or guns, or guns in front of the American Flag. The one who professes to be an expert in communism, socialism, fascism, capitalism, etc., but hasn't picked up a history or political science book in decades, if at all.
Perhaps they like to quote the guy from "Duck Dynasty" as if he were Confucius. Or maybe they'll say something about blacks or Hispanics or Muslims that comes off just a tad bit racist. Or, hell, really racist for that matter. And then they'll explain it away with some sort of self-serving statement about not being beholden to "political correctness."
Then imagine that your stupid Facebook friend/family member was at one time a nominee on a major political party ticket for the second most powerful position in the nation, and just a heartbeat away from being the most powerful person in the country and possibly the world.
I'm guessing your idiot Facebook friend would look something like this:
Because, face it. When you boil it down, that's all who Sarah Palin is. She's your idiot Facebook friend who has absolutely no clue how stupid he or she sounds, and will never, ever shut the hell up.

(42,641 posts)Sarah Palin, George Bush, Mike Huckabee, the list of ignorant, uninformed Republicans could go on and on. Agreed they are all ignorant and uninformed, in the grand tradition of Ronald Reagan himself and the Know Nothing Party. But they serve a useful purpose in American politics. Many Americans demonstrate very little actual knowledge of American history or current events. But ignorant people do not appreciate being shown up, and they do need to feel that they are actually quite smart. Therein lies the genius of the Republicans who actually run the party. By nominating ignorant people, the Republicans appeal to the average ignoramus who feels that he/she is just as smart as that person running for President. Sarah Palin is the ideal candidate to appeal to the uninformed because by her language and actions she validates the American myth that ANYONE can be President.

(42,641 posts)Hello Professor,
I mainly play acoustic guitar, but do electric occasionally to play with my brother. I played mandolin and bass in college with a group doing bluegrass, but I like many styles. Like you, I played in bands but now mainly with myself. Easier to please yourself. (Ha ha) I only have 2 acoustic and 2 electric and 1 uke. Plus a couple of amps.
Thanks for the number of guitars. I showed your post to my wife as proof that clearly I do not have enough guitars.
Likes include Richard Thompson, Mike Dawes, Chet Atkins, too many to list. I prefer a 4 finger style with my own nails. I could never control the flat pick well enough. Have you ever tried plastic or metal fingerpicks? In my experience metal picks sound great with a slide.

(58,440 posts)I remember distinctly. A RW poster on another board I frequent's first comment when he posted about Sarah: "Finally, a candidate I would do!"
Yeah, he really posted that. Most of the RW hoopla can be explained away as adolescent fantasy BS IMHO.

The man may be a hero, but Sarah Palin is living proof that the man is incapable of making a responsible decision about an important issue.
Whenever people are quoting John McCain, and saying "John McCain thinks it would be a good idea to..."
All you have to say is: "John McCain ALSO thought Sarah Palin was qualified to be PRESIDENT." End of argument.

(43,085 posts)....with whom your acquainted, and upon viewing their page with morbid curiosity, you are astonished at the lack of political knowledge on that person's part.
For example, there was a kid I went to school with named Dusty. I didn't know him real well, but was acquainted with him. Never had any real issues with him. He did come off as a little bit of a village idiot type, not taking anything in life real seriously and was essentially a naïve yet harmless jackass. Think the Ziggy Sobatka character from The Wire (before he shot the Greek's guys). Never had a remote inkling of any interest in politics or anything deep at all.
Well, Dusty grew up. Sort of. I never bothered to friend him on Facebook, but his posts would sometimes pop up on my feed since some of my friends were friends with him. Apparently Ziggy--I mean Dusty--got himself married, procreated, and is gainfully employed spinning records at the local bar as "DJ Dusty". Which, hey, I'm happy for him. Good for him in that department.
Except that DJ Dusty has found his political soul. The problem being, his political soul is a moron. His page is littered with stories from "The Tea Party News Network", Ted Nugent, memes saying "Liberalism is a Mental Illness," Rand Paul quotes, and statements such as, "Damn shame for Selma that it came out at the same time as a movie people actually want to see", "In all 57 States he's a Muslim" and "Do we have a new president today?" His most recent post was a cryptic "Scott Walker". Nothing else but "Scott Walker". I don't get it, either.
Plus he has plenty of non-political idiocy as well. Weird all caps phrases such as "TAKEYOSHIRTOFF!" and "UKNOWDAZZRITE!"
I would have hoped that maybe DJ Dusty would have gained some wisdom from his high school days. Sadly, he hasn't. He's actually stupider now than he was then. And frankly, his stupid jackassery was never the problem. There's nothing wrong if someone doesn't have the highest level of cognitive intelligence. However, a lack of political intelligence is inexcusable. I mean, look at Ben Carson. He's got a brilliant medical mind that most of us could only dream to have and has achieved great things as a doctor. And yet politically, the man's a complete dunce.
But looking at Sarah Palin, and looking at DJ Dusty, I honestly see no difference. No difference whatsoever. And I'm sure everyone on this board probably has at least one idiotic acquaintance who is essentially interchangeable with the former Alaskan Governor and Vice Presidential nominee.

(10,252 posts)Have you ever noticed how the really stupid ones have little or no filter on all the hatred that they spew? They see demons and scarey "socialists," who want to destroy freedom at every turn. I've been reading some of the Ven. Bokar Rinpoche's writings (a very high and well-respected Tibetan Lama), and I love his quote that "Anger makes you stupid." I've been thinking a lot about stupidity lately, mainly because I see so much stupidity in the RW political arena. It's not enough for them to have a political disagreement with progressives. Oh no, they have to demonize everyone with whom they disagree. And their disagreements aren't really even disagreements, because there is no analysis, no study of the causes and consequences of this or that policy. It's all fearful projections and emotional reactions to "the other." And angry denial and resentment that the world is constantly changing. It hasn't been 1952 for a really long time.
Anger makes you stupid.

(37,428 posts)Turns out that's millions of dollars of difference between her and the rubes.
We don't hear much from her these days, because by vacuous rube standards, she's not as pretty as she used to be--and she's rich enough that she is no longer desperate for attention. Thank goodness her ideology at least spared us her being pimped as a literal sex symbol; her little wink is as far as she went, and that was a long time ago.
