Okay, don't tell anybody... this is the REAL plan for "The Interview"

They set up a website at SeeTheInterview.com where, for the mere entry of a credit card number and expiration date, you can watch the movie.

So, every data thief is going to use a stolen credit card number to watch it.

2. Post inspired me to look up Kernel

The digital distribution of “The Interview” has become the coming-out party for an interesting new venture operating in stealth mode in partnership with Sony Pictures.

The branding for Kernel is prominently displayed on the website on Seetheinterview.com, one of the digital homes Sony announced Wednesday would be streaming the controversial film day and date with hundreds of independent movie theaters.

But Kernel actually isn’t just what it appears to be on the website it built with Sony and other vendors, including online payment processor Stripe. The startup stepped into the crucial role of hosting the stream because of a pre-existing relationship with the movie studio to handle a very different task: To launch an innovative marketing campaign for “The 5th Wave,” a new action franchise starring Chloe Grace Moretz that Sony just began promoting Tuesday night even though it doesn’t bow in theaters until January 2016.

In an interview Wednesday with Variety, Kernel CEO David Harvilicz disclosed that Sony reached out because of his company’s streaming capabilities. “Sony has been working very hard to get this film out,” he said. “They believe in defending the freedom of expression.”

I don't think I saw what they saw for the basis of "prominently displayed". Kernel was in small print next to the copyright designation under the sponsor logos which are easier to spot.

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Kernel, the digital media company that uses ground-breaking technology to dynamically engage audiences, has partnered with Sony Pictures to deliver “The Interview” to U.S. audiences via Internet streaming for $5.99. Kernel’s trusted web streaming platform provides an outlet for premium viewing of the film by movie fans.

“Our work with Sony Pictures on ‘The Interview’ showcases one of the many innovative ways in which Kernel is redefining the movie audience experience.”

To view the film, customers can visit www.seetheinterview.com where they can instantly view the movie in a browser or on any mobile device or connected TV. “The Interview” is available for a two-day rental for $5.99, from 10:00 a.m. Pacific time on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014, through Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time.

Security is essential to Kernel. To provide as secure of an experience as possible, Kernel has partnered with Stripe, a leading payment processor that processes billions of dollars each year for companies such as Facebook and Twitter.

“When the opportunity arose for Kernel to release ‘The Interview,’ the challenge was how to get this done while keeping people’s information safe,” said Kernel’s Chief Technology Officer and Co-founder Andy Martinez. “The best way is just not to collect anything beyond the minimum payment details necessary to prevent fraud and ensure quality customer support.”

Interesting discovery of a company I never heard of. Apparently, they are known for streaming capabilities and based on the information available at the direct site they have a movie available to watch which has a theater date for January. A $30 viewing seems to be their "deal". Don't see much of a selection besides The 5th Wave.

4. THE INTERVIEW IS A PIRATE HIT WITH 200K DOWNLOADS

The unexpected release of The Interview is making headlines around the world, but for now only people inside the U.S. can see the film. Perhaps unsurprisingly, 200,000 people have already circumvented this restriction by turning to torrent sites where the film appeared just an hour after its official release. Even The Pirate Bay joined in and started pointing people to the movie as well.

Facing a “terrorist” threat theaters all around the U.S. backed away from showing The Interview last week.

Sony Pictures was left with no other option than to find online platforms to show the controversial movie to a broad audience during the holidays, and they eventually did.

Yesterday afternoon news broke that the film was available for streaming on YouTube, Google Play and Xbox Live. A group of hackers shouldn’t be able to chill freedom of speech, Sony and Google reasoned.

“…after discussing all the issues, Sony and Google agreed that we could not sit on the sidelines and allow a handful of people to determine the limits of free speech in another country,” Google’s Chief Legal Officer David Drummond commented.

Unfortunately, however, this free speech can only be heard by the U.S. public for now. People outside of the States will have to wait for weeks or months to see a film that was “trending” worldwide on Christmas eve.

And that’s where another group of self proclaimed freedom fighters come in.

Shortly after the first stream was made public various pirated copies quickly started to populate torrent sites and other sharing platforms.
