My christmas gift this year

Hello

AS some of you might know - I am not an american but have been on this board for a while - in fact many years now - first lurking, then registered for a more active role in this forum... And it have been a interesting time on this board

And I have also written a few times about my own experience with a system the US at current doesn't have - Universal Health Care - something I encountered this year too.

Last Thursday I got little sick - little pressure and a hurt feeling in my chest in the evening - but I was not thinking much about it - I always have some pain here and there thanks to some kidneys who sometimes doesn't play ball - so I just was thinking it was them who was acting up again - but the pain in the chest was not stooping - even if it was not as bad when I got to bed - over the night it got worse again - but in the end it was at least less painfully again, so I got a few hours nights sleep - wake up - had that painfully chest pain again - but I got along with my day as I usually should - had plans going to the shop doing the Christmas thing stuff - buying food - and the rest - but it was not to be that - as my chest pain contained to be painfully - in fact it got that bad I had to call my general doctor - to ask for some advice and maybe a appointment - it ended up calling what in norway goes for 911 - to ask for some help there - and they asked me a few questions about how it was - where it was and so one - and also reported it was a ambulance on the way to my address - the operator also kept me on the phone to the ambulance arrived - and I was able to get some help - at first it was a EKG who was not telling to much - but they deiced to take me to the hospital anyway - and there I was in the emergency room for a while - as it was a busy day and sadly some waiting - blood tests was taken - and in a hours time i was told I had a little heart attack - at the age of 38... I was rather puzzled about it all - maybe somewhat in shook when I was getting into another room, where they gave me all sorts of medicines - even a "shot" of morphine - to do something with the pain I had (it was rather nasty that pain) - as the pain subsided I was asked a lot of different questioning to be sure they know what it was about - and I answered as best I could....

Later that evening I was in a hospital bed - been cared for and given a lot of help and medical attention - i even had the room for myself that night and I slept rather well - as I had not getting to much sleep the night before... The next day - i was told I had to go to another hospital - as the local hospital was more of a general hospital - with not all of the expertise when it came to the heart - so I was taken to a ambulance - and was at the bigger, more experienced hospital in 12 minutes with blue-lights and it all when needed (Usually it takes 30 minutes drive from Bærum Hospital to Rikshospitalet, who are the most advanced hospital with some of the most experienced doctors in the whole of Norway and the driver was rather experienced - and good at driving!) and in 1/2 hour even operated on.... It was a small blockade in one of the blood vaines near the heart who had been the course of it all - and the blockade was cleared - and I was in another room - with a lot of monitors - and kept under surveillance to the next day.

The next day I was driven, again by ambulance to my local hospital - and kept there over the weekend - and my heart was monitored for the whole time.. The nurses, the doctors and the rest of the staff cared for me as best they could - I also had some friendly shats with some of the others who was there - a elderly couple whose husband was given a peacemaker, the lady was somewhat stressfully - but the husband was a rather laid back gentleman who often told his wife to calm down and take it easy.. Some Lawyer who was a rather interesting man - and some other people who I was talking to....

Today, I was able to go home - after been in a hospital for almost a week - and I was not paying a dime for the pleasure - as I live in a country with Universal Health Care - Some would say I have already paid for it - by taxes (who I guess most americans would find appealing) but up front - for a hospital stay who had if I had been living in the US maybe cost me 250.000 to 400.000 dollar - I would say I got a better deal - as I had not been paying a dime for it.... I would also get some new medication so I hopefully will not get that problem again anytime soon - *sigh* as I docent have enough as it is because of my two kidneys....

I got my Christmas present I wanted this year - I got home for christmas - and my heart act as a heart should do - hopefully for the rest of my life....

And I have to say - I'm gratefully I live in a country with universal Health Care who you will get your medical need attended to - even if you are not a wealthy person - or powerfully - I got in a way my life back this christmas - and that is the best christmas present I will ever be given - thanks to the excellent medical staff at Bærum Hospital - and at Rikshospitalet -

Last - I would wish you all a good Christmas - wherever you are in the world - and hopefully we all Will be given something you want for christmas - I was given my present - little early but other vice a Christmas gift I will remember for many years...

not lighter in the bank account.

I've been thinking that I would rather pay taxes instead of insurance premiums for my healthcare, and yours, and his, and hers and that guy over there.

Merry Christmas and keep on keeping on.

You are right - I would have been a nasty Christmas gift to get home If I had to pay it up front - or "co-pay" even after the insurance take most of it - I would recommend it to everyone to get universal Health Care - the fear of going to the hospital for treatment is so much lover when you doesn't need to be afraid of going broke because of a hospital bill... But then again - I guess I would have been dead allready from my kidney problems last year if I had been living in the US - or broke... Maybe both...

And merry christmas to you to

I have been around - lurking at least - but sometimes the subjects at DU is maybe little to "american" for me - and then it is better to read and try to understand rather to express myself and maybe get into something I could not get myself out of in a good way.

And I'm okay now - little tired in the body but in spirit I'm fine I just have to do as the doctors ordered - take care of myself

God Jul - happy Cristmas - Do you know even the vikings was making Jul - they usaly was "drining Jul" from the 13-14th of december and 15 days thereafter - it was a time of festivitiy - eating wisiting your nabors or friends - or familiy who you might else dosen't was able to wisit to often - and to have som grand visits from other places now and then - so God Jul have a double meaning even after cristianity got hold in Norway around 1030 AD..

Im not sure about the Lutefisk stuff - I think I wil be trying to be verry carefull about what I eat this cristmas - eating traditionally cristmas food is rather hard even on a heart who is 100 percent where it should - I think I wil stick to food who is little less stressfull this year - even though I do like a decent made Lutefisk

11. Glad you pulled-through, Diclotican.

Scares with the heart are particularly attention-grabbing, yes?

I am just a few years older than you, and had a similar scare a couple of years ago. The differences were that my feelings of extreme discomfort arose from stress and blood pressure issues (since largely addressed and mitigated), and my heart was OK and unblocked, thankfully. The other big difference was that even though I had 'insurance' and did not require surgery, an ER visit followed by an overnight stay in the hospital for monitoring here in the US cost me more than $3000.

So yes, like you, I am a supporter of universal health care.

I am very glad that you are still with us. Your posts are always thoughtful and interesting. Merry Christmas to you & yours,

It is rather attention grabbing the whole experience thats true... And I'm glad I do followed my little voice in the back of the head who said "do something you stupid".. And I should maybe have been calling 113 (the equivalent of 911 here in Norway) that night instead of waiting for Wednesday to arrive - as I suspected foul play here - but who could believe I had a heart attack at the age of 38... That's something for older people -like in the 50s or 60s

Stress and high blood pressure issue is also something that could do you no good - and a rather painfully experience no doubt - but it was problery hard enough for you to experience... and 3000 for a overnight stay just check that you are okay - wow I would possible never had been able to pay just that - or at least it would hit my savings account rather hard.... Not to say a whole week of hospital stay as I did... Or for that matter when my kidneys deiced to have a little holly day with pneumonia last year - and I was stuck in the hospital for 3 weeks - then I would have been broke for the rest of my life I suspect.. Or possible dead because of lack of treatment...

If I had not already been a supporter of universal health care - i would have been it then - and I do hope sometime down the road - also the americans would be able to experience what universal health care is all about - instead of for profit care as it is present in the US...

I'm also very glad I'm still here - and I will do my best to make sure to be here for years to come yet.. I try at least to make some point making a thoughtful post - and maybe at least give some perspective from abroad for things that's your world..

And a merry Christmas to you and your family and friends too.

I have been given the Christmas gift I will never forget - that's for sure - and I'm glad I am well now - after a rather challenging week to put it madly - some new medicines to do - but in all I'm fine - and now I just have to recover my health and do some adjustments in my life - and then I might as well never get it again...

Hopefully my english at least have been better over the years - from my first rather clumsy sentences who I apologized for not be a english speaking person - to now where I'm more able to write what I feel - even if I still lack many words and have to use "simpler" wordings to get my meaning across - I do have it all in my head - but I do not have the ability to write it down - yet..

My Christmas gift to all americans would have been access to universal health care - a President who stood by his conviction 100 percent - and who was able to nail it true the Congress and the Senate - and give all americans who wanted it - access to a public founded health care system - who could rival any health plan from the private sector - even if ACA is a baby step in the right direction - it is far from what I wish americans could be given... And should had access to..

And yes I do get the best gift I could ever wish for

Merry Christmas to you too

I try to be a kind person - even if I can be as cranky and nasty as the next person - when needed - in fact I scared the jeebus out of one of my nabours a few years ago when she was in a foul mode - and I kind of had a 3 stage anger attack - to wake me up 8 in the morning for something that I do not have anything to do with are not a good thing, even if I am in a good mood - something I was not that morning - and I kind of told her that - that I was not amused by her knocking on my door 8 in the morning (she is a little nuts)... It took her many mounts to dear to say hello to me again....

I like to think I have been able to write a better english now than when I started back in the days - english is not that difficult to learn - even if it have its drawback - specially if you try out some of the more complicated english words - then I'm at a loss rather easy... But thanks to my old trusted dictionary I'm able to at least write a better english now than I started out writing here on DU..

Latin is a language difficult to learn - even if it one of the building blocks for most europan languages - that be the latin ones - or the germanic ones - who got influenced by Latin often by the Catholic Church - who was often the only place you could get education at all for centuries in Europe... I'm afraid I'm not good in latin - even though I did educate myself some latin who I then forgot. But it is always a good thing to at least be able to learn - to educate yourself is also a way to make yourself a better person

Cheers to a happy new, and healthy 2015 - and a merry christmas for you and your family big or small

It was not pleasant at all I would say you - but at least I got the medical attention I was in need of without the burden of financial woes - It must te terrified for americans to have to worry more about how to be able to play your medical bills if you get sick - rather than to get well - and then go on with your life... I would posible never understand the fear many have as I have never experienced it..

It was rather unpleasant thats for sure - but at least I had the benefit of knowing when to call 113 - and then also to get the medical attention I was in need of - and was not going broke in the process - that is always a way of making sure you get well faster

I do hope one day - that you all in the US is given something that I have access to - a universal health care system - ACA is a baby step in the right direction - if not your conservatives is able to kill it now as they are in charge in Congress again (I have never understood anyone who have to work with their hands and and feet's for a living ever will contemplate voting for conservatives as it is clearly against your better judgment) but still just a little baby step in the right direction to universal health care..

Merry Christmas - and a good new year when it come - And I'm glad I'm still here - and gratefully for everything

If americans just had understood what universal health care is all about - not what they have been told - but what is really is - a blessing if you neeed it - then I think 99.9 would DEMAND overnight to have acess to the same system - and would if not given acsess to it - vote out every one who was standing in the way of it.. The GOP as we know it would end their existence -and they would be in the vilderness for a generation or two becouse of their failure to understand what americans wanted... If they not just had been tearing the Capitol down - stone by stone in anger over been denied the acess..

The worst is - most americans would not be paying to mutch more taxes - if more money had gotten to a universal health care from a bloated Pentagon budget - if just 30 percent of the bugded had been gutted - and the money saved spendt on universal health Care in all 50 states I doubt many americans would need to pay more in taxes - and even then Pentagon would have the meanest hard nucled army, navy and airforce in the world... At the current US spend as mutch as the next 20 states on the list over nations who use a lot of the BNP to military needs...

20. Diclotican, what a horrible scare!

Please take care of yourself - you need more rest than you may think (even at 38!) for your heart to repair and regain its strength. If you think you may be overdoing it, you are.

Have a great Christmas.

Thank you - it was some scare to experience it all - but I got good care from my local hospital - and I was given a lot of information about how to proside with my life - and I was requmented to do some excersises - carefully at first - and to have a lot of rest as my heart are not up there yet - at least for the nex 4 weeks I was more than ordered to NOT showel any snow - and to do some harder labour than coocing myself a coup of tea - so I guess I wil do as ordered by the doctor then

And that you did not have that experience in the US, as it would have likely bankrupted you. I didn't realize you were so young, I'm going to have to adjust the voice I hear in my head when I read your posts, I like hearing "your accent" as I read.

Thank you - I just wrote what is on my mind - when I read others here on DU - sometimes I nail it - sometimes I fail - for the most part pepole have been kind to me - even if some have been "asses" too - and a few ones even have blocked me from comunicating to them... And some have even lost their privilige beeing on this board - and Im still here And have no plans to leave

Norway is not that cold - you have to expect some minus every winters - but for the most part - specially in the summers it is rather comfortable and warm here - not as in the south of the US - but still comfortable warm...

It is expensive to live in Norway - so they say - but if a person on disablity is able to live here I think most pepole are able to live here....

And US are indeed a sick country this days - but it is a posiblity you can recover - as anyone who is sick - it is just to find the right anti-biotic to get the ilness out of the system...

Thanks for letting us know what's going on with you. Both because it illustrates where we could go, if we can muster the will and the determination, and because it's good to know how life is treating a friend.

First, I'm so glad to hear you are home and healing well.
Second, so glad you have expert medical care.
Third, this kind of episode would have bankrupted many Americans, they would have either had to file bankruptcy or spend the rest of their lives (no doubt shortened by the financial stress) paying off the bill.
A lesson for us all.

It most be horrible - to be more vorried about going to a hospital to get medical attention becouse of the bill - rather than going to a hospital and getting the treatment as needed... That is a fear Im not able to understand - as I have never experienced it myself...

And I would posible either be broke for the rest of my life - or also dead becouse of lack of treatment - or have my life shortened by stress - and the lack of medical attentions even after reqovering from the heart attack...

I do hope Universal Health Care wil arive in the US too - doubtfull anytime soon - but still...

Hopefully you got the best from both sides - that be From the finnish side or the Norwegian side - well for you it might be the best sides - but for everyone else around it - might not so

My broken english grammar is kind of giving me away as a not a native speaker of the english language - sadly enough I never managed to get the grammar correct - even if I had some good teachers in school...

And it is nice that you have enjoyed my posts so far - many have been kind to point to that - that they have enjoyed my posts on different subjects - even if my grammar are less than perfect

I will do my best to heal well - and to stay well - I was given some advice by the staff at the hospital about what I should do - and I will try to do it as best I can - and over new years I will enroll in a "hearth club" of sorts, who the local hospital hold - to get advices to how to proside in the next year - everything from the diet - to exercises and so one - so I am in safe hands

68. so glad you're okay

I am moving to Europe next week and have already used the services there last month when I had a tooth/gum abscess. I will be living in Switzerland and went to the University hospital with this abscess and got treated right away even though it was dental related. They took xrays and treated the abscess with antibiotics by lancing it (locally only, not pill form) and repeated the visits for a week, nearly every day, until it was healed. Total cost was 400 swiss francs. The xray was 150 so 5 visits to the dentist was less than 250 bucks with medicine for rinsing the gums. That is outstanding service for the costs.

My brother was in the Cleveland Clinic (heart specialty hospital in Ohio) this past week with his heart disease. He had his first heart attack around 37. He has had 5 stints put in his heart and 3 of them had calcified and were blocked. He had them reopened this week and although the surgery was supposed to last 3 hrs, it took 8 to finish. He has excellent health care insurance and since he's been with the company over 30 yrs (rare these days), he won't have to pay more than his deductible which I am not sure what it is. When you work for a company as long as 30 yrs, you finally get the health care you deserve here. Which is exactly how you describe it in your original post. Health care should not be for profit and my spouse and I feel the same as you do about it.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you will surely be enjoyed by your family. Peace.

Im also very glad Im okay - little tired - but that goes with the territory I have been told - the hearth need sometime to get back to old habits - and in the meantime it wil do its best to let me know when I have been doing to mutch - I it somewhat wierd that a blood pump who have worked well for 38 years, sudently out of the blue should act like that - in retrospect I suspect the body have tried to tell me that I should gotten to the doctor before - but if you dosen't listen - you have to learn it by doing it - and Boy I learned a lot of it all.. If it ever happend again I would not wait just to "not bother anyone"....

Good you got your teeth fixed - and not to expensive either - 400 swiss franc is a sheap bargin when you think about it... I just wonder how it would have cost you back in the states for the same treatment...

Healt care should not be about profit - it should be a national pride for every nation to have a health care who was able to treat everyone with respect - and withouth making pepole go broke in the prosess - It is disgusting to know pepole are denied acess to healt care - becouse of either the lack of incurance at all - or becouse incurance companies deny you the treatment you need - it should be enough to make criminal actions from the autorities plausible if you ask me...

77. Exactly

But the ACA made that illegal - refusing service or rejecting you because you have a pre-existing condition. No longer allowed under "Obamacare/ACA". Thank goodness. As a middle aged woman, I've always had to pay more for insurance because of those child bearing years where they would have to cover pregnancies even though I didn't have children. That is now illegal too.

So the new insurance law helped women like me for several reasons, 1. can't charge us more because we're female, 2. can't reject us because we might get pregnant, 3. can't deny to cover us because of being a female or 4. for pre-existing conditions. Also 6. children in college can be carried under their parents' policy until they are 26 yrs old.

So that's what is good about the law.

What's bad about the law is that they didn't control costs of insurance premiums. Our deductible costs doubled in 2014 from 2013 and doubled the year before that too. We used to have a deductible of 1000 dollars but then it went up to 1500 then 3500 in 2014. When you have employer provided health care insurance, you cannot go out to the market place and buy your own insurance so there is no competition (yet).

But we got some serious sticker shock in Switzerland. Our premiums for my spouse and are three times what we paid ourselves through my spouse's employer. We have to purchase on the open market in CH and don't have subsides from the employer so we have to pay full price. Ouch. But we are covered for hospitalization, emergencies and I can see a Naturopathic Doctor which is what I prefer anyway.

Anyway, Merry Christmas and take care of that ticker (heart) and be well in 2015. Maybe we'll meet on the other side of the pond. Cheers!

ACA is just a baby step in the right direction - and I guess the President do know that - it is just a small step on a long road to something better - but it ended a policy of making it impossible for people getting a sensible insurance at least - because of "pre-existing conditions" or that you had to pay more because of the fact you was a woman....

The ACA as you point out - have its setbacks - that for sure - but I guess it was the best you could get back then - it is amazing ACA was able to get a foothold in the door at all - with the Congress you had then - and I suspect any progress to ACA - would be more difficult the next 2 years - as the republicans will do their best to ruin what progress was made by ACA at all...

I guess it is more expensive in Switzerland - and that your premiums is more expensive than it was in the US - but at least you can get a fair medical attention in Switzerland too.. And that is rather important I would say...

I will do my best to take care of that ticker of me - I would not have a re-run of that anytime soon - even if it was a small attack compared to others - it was rather painfully and stressfully - I was not in any fear really - i suspect it was to painfully to make me afraid - and It could also because I had read about it before - I'm a rather curious fellow who read a lot - of everything - and I suspect it might as well have helped me when it started in honest last Wednesday - the fact I had some insight into it.. And it might as well be because I understood it - i had at least a grandfather - a uncle and a father who had problems with the old ticker - So I might have been learning something there too...

Maybe - it is not that long way from Norway to Switzerland really - somewhat over a hour flight - even if it is rather expensive in Switzerland It is at least as expensive as in Norway...

A true allegory.

We are told that, two millenia ago, a person was born who changed humankind's hearts for the better. Yes, terrible things are often done in his name, perversions of his words -- but the philosophy remains, available to all who open themselves to it.

Your heart has always been big, my dear Diclotican. But this Christmas season, it became even a little more open. Let's hope that all of our hearts follow, that all the world's people become warmer in our embrace of one-another this year.

(Preferably without the need for a hospital stay.)

Congratulations, and best wishes for a speedy recovery,

- Manny

Indeed - it is good news - and I know that his name often have been perveted - misused - and twisted to mean nothing - but his philosofy eksist - and is open to everyone who want to open itself to it - And I do hope I am able to open myself to his philosofy - of doing good for others - regardness of what you think of him - he shanged our way of thinking - hopefully to the better - even with all the setbacks over 2 millenia ago..

I do try to care for the ones who I think needed some to care for them - even if I just are able to do my little share of it all - and I suspect my heart, got little more open this season - not to say fixed And I do hope I can use my experience to do something good in the next year too - for anyone who might need a comforting word - or something else in their life...

And I do hope - that the world as we know it - can shange a little bit - to the better next year - at present it is not mutch to make it better - but it have to start somewhere

Thank you Marmar - and I am indeed fortunate to be living in a country who gives a dam about its citizens - it is far from perfect - but by all minds - far better than anything else on the table... Even if the conservatives here too want to do away with it all - hopefully they wil fall from grace in the next year or so....

I think I won big in the lottery when I was born in Norway - and not in some other places - even if it was a close call as my father was really poundering emigrating to the US when he was a young man - back then he could have getting a decent job - paid well - and with all the benefits of being a norwigian in the US..... But for some reason he came back - and lived in Norway and Sweden for the rest of his life...

85. Diclotican thank you for sharing such a moment with us.

If you had been here in our country the heart attack would have been made worse just worrying about the bill and if insurance covered it all.

Best to you, and always enjoy your posts.

It was a moment that I discovered my own limits so to speak - but also a moment where I discovered how gratefully I am - to live in a country where universal health care is posible.. And also so greatefull I was able to come home for christmas - a hospital are not a place to be at christmas - even if they help you and treat you as best as they are able to do..

So - I was sharing this moment, really for everyone who wanted to read my story - as it was a verry important moment in my life - a life who I do hope wil shange my outlook on many things the next decades to come.. I just got the christmas presant I wanted this year - my health and coming home again

Thank you for your kind words - I have allways enjoyed your post as well - you have a conviction I like

Im better - and I have had a nice christmas evening allready (Norway celebrate Christmas the 24th not the 25 as in most of the rest of the world some wierd reason) so I am on "the final leg" in my celebrating of Christmas - the US are just starting on their Christmas now

I hope for a better new year - and I wish the best for everyone around the world - someday - barbarism wil be defeated - and even US getting Universal Health Care as the rest of the world...

Merry christmas to you too

And indeed - it turned ut well - at least for me - now I just have to make the right adjustments to my life - and then hopefully I will never experience anything like this again - it was really a painfully experience... But Um glad I was able to go to a hospital and get the treatment I needed - and was able to walk out again - as a man on the mend

Mery christmas to you to - and Im glad Im home

The faster the US come to universal healthcare the better it is - But I guess if US ever got universal health care - millions of pepole who now have no or lack propper incurence would swamp the system for years - becouse of the fact they never was able to be given medical attention for their health problems - and now is able to get it...

But I do wish for universal health care for everyone in the US - how you get there is your way to sort out - but universal health care IS the future - just pepole who still are in the middle ages would belive othervice....

Merry Christmas to you too

And I am very glad I live in a country - where universal Health care is still in high regard - if it was up to me - everyone in the world should have acess to single payer - instead of a system of "for profit" system...
