This is the New Civil Rights Movement and It Will be Digital

I’ve been going to racial justice marches in New York City for nearly 20 years (for Abner Louima, for Amadou Diallo, for Sean Bell, for Ramarley Graham) and I’ve never seen anything like the mass protests in response to Eric Garner. This gives me hope.

Protests like this one happened all over the U.S. With respect to Gil Scott Heron (who told us that The Revolution Will Not be Televised), this movement is and will be digital. More precisely, this new civil rights movement is spreading quickly because it is digitally augmented through Twitter, Vine, Instagram and other social media platforms. The movement is also, simultaneously, in the streets. It is both/and – both digital and material – at the same time. And this, too, gives me hope.

The both/and, digital/material feature of the new civil rights movement means several hopeful things.

It means that it’s both youth-led movement, and it is intergenerational. It means that it’s both youth-led and leaderless, in the traditional sense. It also means that it both circumvents and subverts legacy civil rights organizations that are now mostly corporate-funded or corporate-affiliated. It means that it is a multi-racial, multi-ethnic movement.

The both/and quality of the new civil rights movement means that while much of the organizing is happening online – through websites like Ferguson Action, and email newsletters like thisisthemovement published by DeRay McKesson (@deray) and through Twitter hashtags #EricGarner #BlackLivesMatter #ShutItDown – people have been showing up in the streets for 118 days now.

Video at the link.

You would only need to watch a minute or two to catch them in a dozen lies. Your finger is going to get tired hitting the Taser button if you watch more than an hour. Not to mention your eyes would cross and your brain would weep with the overload of stupidity. We need to set up tag teams, 30 minutes on and 24 hours recovery time.

Meanwhile, the revolution is underway and has been since OWS. Reminds me of people who deny climate change while Nations like Solomon Islands are already evacuating and reeling from climate change. The revolution will be downloaded and uploaded.

Sadly some here think "revolution" means armed by those protesting. The only ones that are armed are the police and they sure as hell are enjoying using them with excessive force. They are killing black men. It is murder and they are getting away with it. People are saying no more.

I love this.

The revolution will be downloaded and uploaded.
Cause it's the truth.

The old world clashing with the new world. The people are ready for significant change and will bring it, but we're still under the rule of mostly dinosaurs who are resistant to change. But change is inevitable and they know it, which is why we're seeing the dinosaurs gnashing their teeth. They know they're going extinct and this is their last gasp. 20 to 30 yrs from now conservatism will be a dead ideology.

The Madison protests never died, and they helped spawn OWS, which then morphed into a dozen forms & activities. Remember the Moral Mondays.

Things can go underground without disappearing; then they suddenly break out in flame again somewhere else.

Think of it as a series of social experiments, an ongoing and evolving consciousness at loose in the world. Who is it? It is US!

is every bit as likely, given the objectives of the powers that be. The kkkops WILL turn on the people and mow them down. I do not doubt this for a minute. The military probably wouldn't but the cops will without a second thought or even the tiniest twinge of conscience.

Do you actually think that New Yorkers would just go about their business if such a massacre occurred? Do you remember how outraged the American people became when the Ohio National Guard shot four Kent State students dead in 1970? No. This is not China and a 'Tienanmen Square' outcome would only succeed to fan the flames of outrage if not outright revolt.

Do you really think that the media has that much power as to hide a massacre as huge as Tienanmen Square? I think you're giving them more power that they actually have. Besides, the social networks would be all over it.

The very people this revolution is fighting, don't want us to have ready access to social media.

We want to shut them down. They want to shut us down.

Should we wait until it happens, or nip that shit in the bud?

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2014/12/03/krauthammer_on_garner_grand_jurys_decision_is_totally_incomprehensible.html

But when the president says another case of inequality of treatment the implication is about race whereas you could easily explain it as one cop out of tens of thousands in the country who might have acted improperly, the use of excessive force or whatever, but the idea that it was a racial incident is required if you're going to have a second investigation. And that I think is a problem that derives from our history and it forces this into the category of racism.

((we need a faints dead smiley))

It also strikes me as odd that this privileged, white conservative man can bring himself to denounce (or at least ACKNOWLEDGE) the obvious racism in this issue but some of DU's loudest "Liberal" Lions (DAMN the quotes around that word are seriously needed here) can't bring themselves to do the same.
