Honolulu councilmembers are proposing a name change for a popular beach park on Oahu.
Sandy Beach Park could soon be named after President Barack Obama, as council members Stanley Chang and Ernest Martin propose the change to the popular body boarding spot.
The resolution was introduced Thursday after it was mentioned how much President Obama loves body surfing on the east Oahu beach and the fact that he is the first Hawaii-born president.
If the proposal goes through, it would be the first time something would be named after President Barack Obama in the state of Hawaii.

(89,290 posts)In this case there is a personal connection making it more special with some meaning.
In Reagan's case they just want his name on everything including government property.

(17 posts)I don't tend to support things like this, no matter the person. Council members will spend time discussing this when they could be dealing with something of substance. Tax money will be spent to buy and install new signs, tax money that could be spent on much more critical things. Whats the upside for John Q. Public?
If you want to stroke someones ego buy naming something after them, do it with something new that doesn't already have a name. Maybe a new building or a new road.

(70,673 posts)The man has done an awesome job and if the people of Hawaii want to name
a beach in his honor and with an understanding that he loves to body surf I have
no problem with it.

(5,158 posts)And when it does I fully expect RW heads to explode. But of course, it's alright for them to name an airport after Reagan, who fired the striking air traffic control workers. RWers are hypocrites.

(25,816 posts)We didn't call it body surfing, we called it body "whomping" because the waves broke almost on the sand. after graduation night
(1968), we all met there to sober up. I believe the picture above of Obama is at Sandy Beach.
PS: the beach in the background is the body surfing area. In the foreground is a place called "Blowhole" because when the waves come in, they go through a hole in the lava and spurt way up in the air. http://ts1.mm.bing.net/th?&id=HN.608020520203322853&w=300&h=300&c=0&pid=1.9&rs=0&p=0

My mom taught there, so I was able to attend for free. Otherwise it would have been Radford. My mom was a career teacher, and when my dad got stationed at Hickam AFB, mom went to check out the high schools. When she discovered that some of the teachers spoke pidgin, she put her foot down. Punahou was a great school, but 90% of the students were rich, entitled fucks. I never looked back.

(91,055 posts)Kailua High was strict when I was there, but then I was put in the college prep track and really had to bust my buns. '65 was before they split the school, so we had nearly 2,000 students.
Punahou was another world from us in every way possible. We had no money, and public education was nearly free -- which is the whole point of public education afaic.
It's funny about Obama having gone there -- now Mainlanders have heard of it. Now when people hear I'm originally from the Islands, they sometimes ask if I went to Punahou and I'm really bemused.
I'm sorry your classmates sucked: there would definitely be a class structure at a place like Punahou, with its place in the history of the Islands. But I'm glad you felt you got the education anyway.

(78,249 posts)the omnipresent tour company out there that even runs the airport shuttles. There's Punahou, of course, which as panader0 knows puts many college campuses to shame; his grandma's apartment on Beretania St. where he lived after his wife died; the Baskin-Robbins around the corner from there, where he once worked (it's still there!), his favorite shave-ice joint nearby (which offers an Obama-themed flavor of the popular local delicacy!), and, of course, Barack Obama Beach.

(25,816 posts)I actually thought that was the name of the store, and it may have been. Shave ice--10 cents. Sushi--10 cents.
Plus li hi moi (spelling?), the dried plum seeds, heavily salted. And the great pacalolo...

Also, it's pakalolo. Why don't they just go ahead and legalize it already??

But yes, it's a gorgeous spot.
