This is getting goddamn serious, folks, and on a particularly scary level, too. If anyone has any friends or relatives in Eastern Pa., particularly in Monroe County, please don't hesitate to get ahold of them and let them know what's going on.

They need to catch that murderer, and soon.

(725 posts)Seriously?
This is brainwashing and conditioning the masses for the police state.
PLEASE DO NOT GO OUTDOORS AND REMAIN AWAY FROM WINDOWS OR OPENINGS TO THE OUTSIDE.
OMG, BE AFRAID!!! Don't walk by your windows, crawl on the floor. If the cops break your door in - without a warrant, of course - be grateful that they're keeping you safe!

Bet you'd be under the bed.
And what should the authorities do in you wise opinion?
Curious. Please enlighten us.

(725 posts)just look for the guy and everyone else not cower in fear.
I've lived in some very hard core neighborhoods where the murder and violent crime rate was high and I never lived in fear. I went about my business while being savvy about the environment. I even walked my dog at night I also rescued dogs in south central LA and Compton, both dangerous areas, full of gang bangers.
If hiding under the bed makes you feel safe, by all means, do it. I'm merely telling you that's it's nothing less than mass mind control meant to condition you. No different than the war on terror and those stupid color alert levels. That mind control campaign worked, too.
cwydro
(51,308 posts)No one is MAKING anyone stay inside. This is not MIND CONTROL. This is advice about a bad situation.
VERY VERY impressed by your dog walking and rescuing in Compton (and yes I know where and what those areas are).
I spend most of my time on 26 acres in the middle of the country. An area not unlike where this is happening. Deep in the woods. My cell does not work there, except for text. No police can respond even within 20 minutes to where I live. (And that is a stretch).
There was a multiple murder not one mile from my place a few years ago. I was quite sure it was domestic. But until the idiot was caught, I had no way of knowing.
My nearest neighbor is a half mile away. (Pretty sure the neighbors are closer in Compton). And the police are WAY closer in Compton.
So when you live way out in the deep woods and there is a murderer on the loose, hey bud, it ain't so easy to be as cool as you seem to be.
I was terrified. But I did not hide under the bed. I kept my rifle beside and slept light.
But you are really clueless to make a joke of what these people are dealing with.
But hey. you are one cool dude. And I'm impressed.

(5,794 posts)..they don't drive through the neighborhood telling everyone to stay indoors on their loudspeakers? I know they did that when chasing down armed suspects in my neighborhood in Florida.
I get where you are coming from, having lived in some not-so-great neighborhoods myself. Here are the differences in this instance:
1) Assuming Frein is there (as everyone suspects at this point), there IS going to be a shootout.
2) The suspect is know to be armed with automatic weapons
3) He has sniper-like accuracy
Given these circumstances, I think it's wise to tell folks to stay indoors. Another reason -- I don't want Joe Citizen who thinks he's dead-eye dick with his hunting rifle out thinking he'll help out the professionals.

(53,661 posts)People don't think these things through. They want everything gone for liberty and freedom, and think that we'll magically morph into Shangri La.
Magical thinking does not work, and there are people who will ensure the dream of peace and freedom turns into a nightmare. Because the same spirit exists in the haters as in the oppressor.
Refusal to participate, to give positive direction to government with all those tedious details and having to talk to people you don't like and can't bullshit over, is HARD.
Calling for Revolution is easy. Managing the fall out often fails miserably, leading to strong man rule locally. The willful ignorance of assuming that all will turn out well, is foolishness. You have to replace it with what you want, not nothing.
Because there is always in the background of all societies, heirarchies we abhor well organized, ready to take control. That's why I dumped the PoliceState© mindgame. The ravings of that cult, led by Libertarians, Birchers and rightwing religionists effectively leaves a vacuum to be filled by theocrats and strong men, and there will be no appeal for those who don't agree with their dogma.
You either reform the police by participation, or by default you are agitating for a society of armed persons to take their place. There is no middle ground when the ones with money have guns. They always have enforced their religion, their prejudices and their own interests on others.

(53,661 posts)And yes, the sniper in question is an extremist who wants to kill more than just cops, according to his own father. He may be a hero to some, but not me.
I doubt if he'll allow himself to be taken alive, although they appear to have found the house he is holed up in and have gone there. Some think no one should be afraid of this guy. There may be people in the house he killed or is terrorizing now.

(39,961 posts)and that was because I was jones-ing for a cigarette so badly due to the stress and fear of the first part of it that it was more dangerous for me not to do so (it was eerily quiet, too, when the eye passed).
Of course, once I got my fix I went back inside, hid in the bathtub with the cat and prayed the roof wouldn't blow off.
I don't recommend the experience. Any of it. At all. And I'm aware I'm an idiot for wanting a cigarette that badly, but I think I can be excused for the lapse in judgment during the middle of that event.

Its sad this officer got shot and killed but c'mon how is his life worth more than everybody else?
Every victim of gun violence should get the same amount of dedication and attention from the Police.

It is "shelter in place," which is up to you.
Go on out if you want...Take your kids to the ice cream parlor. Go to the movies. (Yeah there's an idea). Oh wait, you don't live there, do you?
Some posters either do not understand "shelter in place," or they are being deliberately obtuse.
No murder is more important than any other murder. But if you do not believe that a guy who shoots cops is more dangerous than your average idiot, well then...I don't know what to tell you. You just want to make it about cops. It is not.
Done with this silly thread. If any of you lived in wooded areas with a known murderer loose, you'd be singing a different song.
Or maybe you are all much, much braver than I.
But I've been there, done that. And I don't think this is about cops. This is about a nutcase threatening innocents.
Obtuse. No other word for it. Deliberately so. Can't see the forest for the trees. Sigh.

Where's the all out manhunt?
Where's the national attention?
Where's the EAS alerts?
How is this any different from someone who goes around in a vehicle gunning down random people. It happens all the time in this country.
Why is a cop's death given special treatment?
cwydro
(51,308 posts)It is about a madman loose with a gun.
You all go on with your agenda.

(7,234 posts)Try me.
People fire off shots all the time in my neighborhood, I won't go out at night or drive by certain streets because its that bad. When someone fires off rounds, at the most you'll see is the cops driving around slowly with their lights off.
A few years 4 people got shot at a house party right around the corner from where I live but I didnt find out until I turned on the news, mind you the shooter got away and the police were long gone.
OTOH if 4 cops got shot in my neighborhood, there would be spotlights everywhere, armored vehicles, helicopters, checkpoints, you name it.
Why?
I never said anything about not being scared. I'm absolutely scared to death when I hear shots going off in the distance. There are people all around the country who also live with the same fear.
I've always said the police should give every shooting and murder the same level of attention they give when a cop is shoot or murdered.

(966 posts)I don''t think this guy would ONLY shoot cops....and carjacking someone to get out of the area might cross his mind
951-Riverside
(7,234 posts)That has nothing to do with my point at all..
All I've asked is why is a police officers death being given more attention. Why isnt every firearm related death or injury given the same amount of attention and dedication?
If a loved one got shot I would want them to do everything in the world to find the person who did it but they're not, all they're going to do is scoop up the body, write a report, give me a card for a detective and go on to the next call.
Why?

Personally, I think he ditched his car and either hot wired or carjacked another one and I hope it's not the latter because he's not the kind of killer who will let witnesses go.
He even looks a little like a reboot of Tim McVeigh.
