LAKE SELIGER Russia (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Friday Russia's armed forces, backed by its nuclear arsenal, were ready to meet any aggression, declaring at a pro-Kremlin youth camp that foreign states should understand: "It's best not to mess with us."

There's been more than one program reporting on the decay of Russia's nuclear weapons and the absence of any real security since the cold war ended.
That, dear, IS the last I had heard about it.

(31,941 posts)1950s all over again. When I was in the Air Force I was part of a team who looked at our missile silos in the Midwest. We found that 2/3s of our missiles were incapable of firing due to corrosion and other problems. But of course you never hear about that.

(31,113 posts)in the early 90s. I worked for a international grocery distributor and we were all scratching our heads when we were asked to quote pricing on "canned bear". Turned out they wanted pricing on canned beer. Plus we supplied a new store in central Russia.

(5,455 posts)Putin and Russia may be more willing to go to war, but involving NATO and more especially the United States would be a grave miscalculation. The Russian military is nowhere as capable as the US military, the biggest concern would be that Russia is defeated so badly that Putin might resort to "tactical" nuclear weapons in a last ditch effort to save both himself and Russia from looking so weak that the Chinese start looking across their border with designs on Siberia and the resources there.

(111,052 posts)we would have to stop hitch-hiking a ride to the space station with them... It would be good to remember that there are no victors in war. I would agree that it is despicable to even think of nuclear war as a means to resolve differences.

That context has been left out of the comments here. And, I'm not going to bother to get the link to Power's diatribe at UN or Obama's full speech about Putin and Russia which was a challenge to Putin and Russia. Most here have seen both as they've been played over and over in the media and on the net.

(25,699 posts)That when nations we don't like say "we will respond to being attacked' we say they are threatening to attack. But when nations we do like actually do launch attacks, we pretend they're acting in pure self-defense.
Putin's an ass, but he's not making threats, he's issuing a warning to not attack Russia.

(84,711 posts)That was the agreement. Putin wants Ukraine to be a Federation and to partner with both EU and Russia. That was his proposal. The Coup promoted by the Neocons and NGO's and the rest want Russia surrounded by Nato and Russia will not stand for Ukraine to have a Nato Base on it's borders. Just as USA would not tolerate Russian Missiles in Cuba. Its a matter of protecting Russian territory and it's access to ports. It won't tolerate Ukrain with Nato base and yet that's exactly what Ukraine's Prime Minister "Yats" as Neocon Victoria Nuland of US State Department has called Nato to have an "emergency meeting" over in the the next week. Ukraine is requesting special treatment for Nato Base. If they are so innocent why do they need a Nato base? Putin sees this as a direct threat to Russia.
It will not go well...

He probably does this on a regular basis...but given current tensions...it gets played in the media (not the media would ever use sensationalism...naw..not ever [stated with heavy bleeding sarcasm]).
Geez...why is this even news. I'm sure politicians from China to Brazil say something similar.
Or this is a thread about "how dare <insert name of country> defy US supremacy!"
