Albertsons Stores Cut Waste by 90%

LAS VEGAS — Supervalu-owned Albertsons announced that 30 stores located in the greater Las Vegas area, Henderson, Nev., and Boulder City, Nev., have diverted more than 90% of all store waste from local landfills.

Through recycling, organic composting and food donations, the stores combined to keep more than 21 million pounds of waste out of local landfills and donate 3.5 million meals to local food bank and hunger relief efforts in the past year.

At the end of 2007, the 30 Albertsons stores were generating an average of 1,588 pounds of waste each day per store, but today each store is averaging just over 100 pounds of landfill waste per day, a 93.2% reduction. Albertsons has thereby eliminated 978 full garbage truck trips annually to the landfill, equivalent to a line of trucks stretching five miles long.

Interesting, it appears that this business has made some great strides in a positive direction on this topic.

I am sure that the company is enjoying some cost savings in the process & that is a significant factor, there is nothing wrong with a win-win situation. If they can do it one wonders just why others are not doing so?

a s***** in your face, but I think they should allowed a bit of wiggle room on being proud of such an accomplishment. However, certainly to each their own.

...moons you in the face the second you open the website site and you can see nothing else until you close the damn thing is slutty.

Slutty in this case refers to the behavior - not the content.

I don't care why they did it. I'm just glad they did.

Since our county put recycle bins all over the county, we take cans, glass, newspaper, and plastic to the bins to dump. We compost. The difference in our garbage output is amazing. 1/3 to 1/2 kitchen garbage bag twice a week.

And I feel good about it. I crow about it. And so should Albertsons.

but when you start sorting, washing, calling or hauling stuff away, the employee hours eat into any savings.

Don't care why they started, just want to note YEA! (I would put in a smiley, but I have lost them. However, check spelling is back, so I am happy.)

There would be some transition costs involved, but much of the sorting can be done as the items are unpackaged en-route to the sales floor or being removed from it. Most stores already bale cardboard & sort plastic, so this may not be a big a transition as one might think and it is possible that the items being recycled may generate income for the store as cardboard bales already do. The items given to food pantries are probably already sorted as departments are culled for close date, out of date or distressed products, it is in most cases simply a matter of being sure that all items that can go to a pantry do indeed get to their in store collection point.

But as a Denver resident and Albertson's shopper, too, I hope our stores are either already doing this or will adopt this model soon. The other thing I like about Albertson's is their sale prices are really their sale prices, no exclusive to people who have "value cards." No extra plastic to carry around, my name, phone number and email isn't on file in some unknown HQ location. Love that! Plus, they're unionized.

but the few things I can't get there I get @ Albertson's. Glad to know they're less terrible than Smith's, Von's, etc.
