(3,184 posts)I once had the privilege of flying from Miami to San Francisco on July 4th. The flight departed Miami at about 8:45 PM. Weather was gorgeous for the whole flight.
For the entire 5 hour and 40 minutes flight all we could see out of the window was fireworks in every direction. It was one hell of a show and both brings into view how big this country is, and how much of the country is populated. Even going over the Rockies we could still see fireworks in every direction.
As a final day of my vacation it was spectacular, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

So do other places. But the RW attitude of acting like the US has no more room for immigrants is idiotic. You can be sure if those immigrants were guaranteed to vote republican when allowed, there would be cheering and open arms from the RW. Like from Cuba, for example...

(11,175 posts)For example, a lot of that empty space is in the Colorado River basin. Most of the time, the river no longer reaches the sea, because the demands for fresh water drain it dry. Demand that's still unmet leads to depletion of aquifers, the building of aqueducts to drain other lakes and rivers, etc.
Then there's the energy issue. Why aren't we closing every coal-fired electric generating plant in the country? Because, even with some conservation efforts, an increasing population means an increasing demand for energy.
Before people jump in to accuse me of xenophobia or racism, let me make clear what I am not saying. I'm not saying that either the immediate humanitarian crisis of children at the border or the longer-term issue of immigration policy should be looked at solely from the point of view of environmental degradation. There are multiple issues. My argument is just that carrying capacity can't be facilely assessed by computing population density or by pointing to vast stretches in Alaska or elsewhere that have few people. There's a lot more involved. Looking out an airplane window, as in the Rall cartoon, does not provide enough information.
