Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsFor guys, Have you ever cut your lip shaving?
This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by quinnox (a host of the General Discussion forum).
The other day, I did so. And it bled like a you-know-what, but only briefly. It was a bit bizarre, because it seemed to heal almost instantly. Like maybe a couple minutes or so, during which I was getting pretty worried, but then no more bleeding at all!
At first, I was pretty worried because I had never done this before, and thought it might be really serious to cut your lip. I even had momentary thoughts of having to go to the hospital. But after it healed so quickly, I was kind of baffled, and relieved.

(111,304 posts)It has happened to me a few times. I also busted my lip about four years ago when I did a face-plant on concrete and broke my arm. That was a major gusher along with another one on the bridge of my nose. The blood covered about a third of my face and it took about two weeks for the blood to peel off my face and before I could shave again.
One the more irritating things that I is occurring now is that I have an in-grown hair in my upper lip. If I don't shave for 2 or 3 days it becomes somewhat pronounced when I lick my lips. I've tried to remove it with tweezers, but haven't had any luck getting it out thus far.
Sounds like you had a major experience with it. Glad you are ok!

99Forever
(14,524 posts)... is that you think it's appropriate to jump in the middle of someone else's thread and throw out bait because they had the audacity not to focus on YOUR agenda and were discussing something you didn't approve.
Like I said, that is what has made DU suck.
BainsBane
(53,003 posts)What a shock. Both you and the OP have jumped into plenty of threads of mine and told me I didn't have a right to post about things I care about, not so coincidentally women's rights. That was all justified though since it was about you want, and that really is what matters. In those cases, it was the fact I posted about rape and violence against women that made DU suck, whereas your interrupting them for your own rants was entirely righteous.
Since I make DU suck by posting about something issues that aren't exclusively about white men, you could always use ignore rather than working so hard to get me to shut up.
Once upon a time a thread like this would have gone in the lounge, but far be it from me to interrupt the intellectual highlight of your week. Please, proceed.

If you go to "My account", and then "Trash can", and then write "hobby" in the space for auto-trash keyword, it will magically disappear most of the threads about it. Just a tip for those who get tired of certain topics that flood the board from time to time.
The trick is to pick a good keyword, and this technique can be used for any "hot" news story that from time to time will flood DU for a while.
Here are some more examples of keywords I have trashed in the past, and my reasons for doing so:
Christie -- because I get really tired of people posting OPs about him. I don't give a fig about the scumbag.
Cruz -- same reason as above.
Palin -- same reason.
Phelps -- same reason.
Steubenville -- some time back, there was a big criminal case in the news about this city, it seemed to be never-ending. I didn't have any interest in it, at all.
wcgreen -- I forget, lol. No idea.
woo -- I just think it is a really stupid internet "fad word", and so I trash all threads referring to it.
After a certain time period, when the topic has faded and is no longer being seen or posted about in a frenzy, you can go back to your auto trash key word and remove the word from the list. One of the best things about DU is each individual can customize it to their liking, and this is one of the strengths of this site, for sure!

After a certain time period, when the topic has faded and is no loner being seen, you can go back to your auto trash key word and remove the word from the list.

(25,128 posts)troll so hard? I'd get bored after saying "It is a false lie!" and accusing people of distortions and fornications ... er, fabrications the first couple of hundred times.
cyberswede
(26,117 posts)But the purpose of your "helpful" thread was definitely a thinly veiled attempt to troll about the Hobby Lobby decision.
You edited to add other "trashed" terms in your list to provide cover for the original intent of your OP - and your trashing of "wcgreen" as a keyword was revealed.
Even if you didn't intend to "attack" WCGreen (which I don't think you intended to do), the fact that you trashed his health update posts does betray a noncaring attitude on your part.
I even warned you about it.
So, next time you want to be clever about your trolling, you might be more careful. Or better yet, don't troll in the first place.
Electric Monk
(13,869 posts)I could understand someone trashing that keyword because it was simply too much to take, and they didn't want to become overly emotionally involved themselves in a situation out of their control.
Sometimes I have to trash threads for just that reason. For example, a month or so ago there was a thread about a group of beagles who had been released from a testing facility and were experiencing the outdoors for the first time in their lives. It was just too much for me, and to avoid thinking about it too much, and worrying myself into a messy puddle about all the other animals still subjects in labs like that, I hid it. I don't think that makes me a bad person for trashing it, do you?
cyberswede
(26,117 posts)I don't really care what he (or anyone) sends to their trash can. The problem for me is the thinly-veiled trolling embodied in that OP - it was clear as day.

(19,549 posts)DU isn't handing out any awards for who angers the most people on any given day. Really. The majority of us just get called to juries and end up shaking our heads at what's taking place. Sometimes people can't get along, at no fault to either party, it's just a personality conflict. Then foolish things get said and people come off looking like jerks. There's no winners when these things happen, just variations of how bad some people come out looking. The admin gave us the Ignore Member feature to manage our own human nature when we run across those situations. I've used it to keep me from putting my own foot in my mouth from time to time. So far it's worked like it was intended for me. Just somethings for you to ruminate on.
I'm going to take you at your word that your inclusion of WCGreen was because you forgot who he was. Be that as it may, you still trashed his name over the rare health updates which are posted here. As I said in your other thread, your admission opened a window into your heart you probably didn't want everyone here seeing into. Which is why I'm able to believe his inclusion in your OP was an oversight.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)and it seems most here think, quite deliberate. At the very least we know if he gets a splinter it;s worthy of DU, but if a long time DUer lives or dies, it is not important. No one can deny that. He hid threads that were about a person who maybe on his deathbed, and LULZ about it. It is what it is.

I haven't been here all that long yet I remember him. Yet a poster from 2002 has no clue or compassion about this man and felt the need to trash the bothersome threads about his progress. That says a lot more about him than the rest of us that are sorely upset by his lack of compassion for his fellow man and fellow DUer.

No, I can read as well as you can. He listed that person's DU name as among terms he had trashed in the past. He didn't encourage anyone to trash threads with that name, or any of the others he listed. He just listed them.
So, yeah, be honest.

(3,891 posts)I use an old fashioned safety razor and wet shave. I often wonder what the hell the idea is with four, or five bladed razors. I mean, does the first blade go on lookout? The second one distracts the hair by asking for a light while holding a cigarette. The third blade grabs the hair from behind, while the fourth blade cuts the hair. Then the fifth blade cleans up to make sure not to leave any evidence behind.
I'm assuming that you were not using one of those, because your lip would be beyond repair if it was cut by five blades.

0. For those who are tired of the Hobby Lobby topic, Pssst
Quinnox was giving examples of keywords he had trashed in the past, wcgreen was one and quinnox had forgotten why, so the lol was about quinnox's forgetting.
That's how it reads to me. Nothing malicious on quinnox's part at all.

(26,117 posts)and when that was too obvious, he edited to add some additional terms that he trashes - as a cover.
That the plan backfired when other DUers applied nefarious motives to his trashing of "wcgreen" as a keyword is merely a side-effect of his own ill-fated attempt at trolling.
That said, trashing health updates about a seriously ill DUer is rather revealing on it's own.

I had a pretty good idea the discussion that started this wasn't the one about the immigrant children coming to America, fracking, Woo or 2016 presidential contenders, but I don't get how that's a "dig".

hughee99
(16,113 posts)just that I had a decent idea without seeing the other thread what the general topic was about.
In general, I'd prefer to see people keep disagreements about a OP or topic within threads about that topic rather than dragging the same arguments into new threads that appear to be about other things.
Having now read some of the offending thread, I can see why people are pissed and now understand the relationship between the two threads.

Optional work camps for the homeless
This idea came to me, there could be work camps for the homeless. They would be optional. You would get a place to sleep, food to eat, and bathrooms with showers for being in the work camp and doing your job. And you would get a minor amount of money for your work, but the bulk of your reward would be food and board. The work would be mostly labor work, and could be simple tasks but still hard work. Perhaps local businesses could have small jobs they need done worked on at the camps, and in return they provide some financing.
This might be good for homeless who are looking to get out of being homeless and teach them new job skills and life skills too.

(12,778 posts)Quick question, though...maybe I just didn't completely understand all of your post. You mentioned the trauma caused by the entry wound. Where was the exit wound?

(53,339 posts)The round blew away half my teeth and jaw, exited my neck, and blew a hole in my shoulder. Pieces of teeth and bone became secondary shrapnel that peppered the left side of my body along with the bullet fragments.
Besides a lot of intraoral operations (like one to lower the floor of my mouth) the big one was reconstructing my left mandible using bone tissue from my thigh. When that bone graft failed 7 years later, the Navy (at NNMC Bethesda) tried replacing it with one of my ribs. That would have worked, but because of the amount of scar tissue there there wasn't a good enough blood supply to deliver meds to kill the normal post-op infections.
The failed rib graft was removed over a period of months during which pieces of the rib were removed by prying them off with forceps intraorally in weekly appointments. A painful process with no anesthetic.
The final op took pieces of bone from my other hip to reconstruct my jaw. And a muscle from my chest was cut and re-routed up to my jaw to improve the blood supply.
Throughout the ordeal, I had the best medical care one could hope for. Unfortunately, both the Army and Navy lead surgeons I had are gone. R.I.P. Dr. Osbon and Dr. Mainus.

(53,339 posts)I would have died in Vietnam if it hadn't been for a nurse at the evac hosp who came back to check on me and discovered I'd stopped breathing--and got them to do an emergency tracheostomy on the spot. Even though the ORs were full with the casualties I'd sent back and they had to do it in the waiting room.
But that notion of strength about us VN vets is one I've encountered often coming from those who weren't there. The truth is that all human beings are strong and resilient and those who, for whatever reason, didn't have to face our test would have performed just the way we did if that had been their lot.
As would you, if you had to do it. You would be strong and you'd do what you have to do to survive. And from what little I know of you here, you'd do it with grace.
