A very, very, very, very, very, very, very long time.
I suspect if Skinner had been running a BBS on his Apple II in 1981 with a 300 baud modem, she would have been there, trolling that.

(10,362 posts)The notion of reentering Iraq is politically unfeasible in the US. And if by some miracle Obama could convince congress to restart a deeply unpopular war in an election year, the issue is completely radioactive in Europe. Britain balked at entering Syria, imagine Cameron trying to round up the votes for this.
ISIS has us beat politically on this, I'm afraid. The best we can do (ironically) is support Iran.
clarice
(5,504 posts)Blue, I'm sure that you already know this......but ... I just found out that this whole big
$%$# mess started in the year 623 with a fight over who would replace Muhammad.
Isn't that a long time to be killing each other ?????!!!!!!
LittleBlue
(10,362 posts)but deadly serious.
We live in a country that is only 238 years old, and one that has won virtually every conflict in which it has engaged, so it's natural for us to be forward thinking. Arabs and Persians have old cultures with traditions of honoring blood feuds.

(111,437 posts)and having Britain draw the borders to pit one faction against the other in these artificial "countries" is the root of the problem.
It hurts to watch this stuff, good people are trapped between gangs of hotheads. However, our only role should be humanitarian care to the people who wisely flee the fighting.
We have no business interfering. Yes, ethnic cleansing will occur. Yes, any Shi'a left in Sunni territory will be slaughtered. However, any Sunni in Shi'a territory will suffer the same fate. At long last, these people will be drawing their own borders that respect those tribal, familial, and sectarian borders. it's the only way to bring stability to the region that doesn't involve vicious dictators with US and European guns and bombs backing him up as long as he keeps the oil flowing.
Bottom line, we have no dog in this fight. Colonialism caused it. Colonialism can't fix it.
LittleBlue
(10,362 posts)You put it succinctly. It is dangerous to invade draw roughly geometric borders around unrelated tribes.

(5,504 posts)And what makes it worse is the fact that if you can ever get these warring factions sitting at a
a peace meeting, how are you ever going to offer an intelligent response when if ask them
"Why are you killing each other" and they look at you blankly and say
"It's God's will"

The schism was there but there wasn't open conflict until after the neocon invasion.
