http://theweek.com/article/index/263632/speedreads-man-scolds-neighbor-for-watching-world-cup-taking-jobs-from-americansLater that night, police received a call from a woman who had received a call from her neighbor scolding her for taking jobs away from Americans.
He called her a name and said he wanted to watch the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing and listen to Lynyrd Skynyrd, but her celebration for the World Cup was disturbing him, according to the police report....
To recap: A man who wanted to blast some Skynyrd and watch a little NASCAR accused his soccer-watching South American neighbor of taking American jobs. No word on whether he closed his argument by bellowing "USA! USA!" into the phone before hanging up.

(1,290 posts)it's that they're dumbfounded over the fact that they're suddenly surrounded by an abundance of people who haven't even said the word "soccer" in four years, and are acting like this is the biggest sporting event in their lives. These people are almost as annoying as the hipsters that only pretend to like the game and think buying scarves, and going to a bar at 7 AM to watch premiere league games makes them worldly, sophisticated, and apart of some unique counter-culture.

(39,390 posts)For the record, there are plenty of Americans who follow the game. MLS draws in excess of 6 million people per year and many more obviously tune in for the Cup. Even if most will be tuning out in mid-July, MLS has a new TV deal with ESPN and Fox and it's hard for them not to feel good about that in light of the Cup ratings. If you'd like an insight into their thinking (which is a little deeper than yours on the topic):
It is a future buy, we are buying pork bellies, we think they will become more valuable over time, and I think the TV ratings will come, Skipper added.

The trend is not your friend here, so keep bleating about the one or two Cup poseurs you may have encountered because your theories on the depth and breadth of soccer's appeal in the U.S. are fast running out of shelf life.

(1,290 posts)Something about his family wouldn't be watching the World Cup because soccer was the "game of socialism." As somebody who played soccer in a certifiably non-socialist area when I was a kid, in a league organized by a church no less, I've never got the impression that sports could only be used to convey specific political philosophies.
