(78,249 posts)It was an Alaskan quake that created the 1960 tsunami that wiped out Hilo, Hawai'i.
I even saw a tree on the northeast-facing shore of O'ahu that grew horizontally for a few inches, then vertically again.

(78,249 posts)There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii, but it has triggered a tsunami warning for part of the Aleutian Island near the epicenter, according to the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center.
No tsunami threat exists for other coastal areas in the Pacific, although some other areas may experience small non-destructive sea level changes for several hours, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says.
The earthquake happened around 10:53 a.m. HST and registered at a depth of 71 miles. Officials say the quake was too deep to trigger a widespread tsunami threat.

What will need to be watched are significant aftershocks.

We don't build big here - except for Anchorage - and we build for earthquakes. It's not unusual to have 6.0 - 8.0 on the Ring of Fire.
I'd rather live with that than tornadoes and floods. The best place to go for accurate info is the USGS sites or http://www.aeic.alaska.edu/
No cruise/tour ships go there; boats out to sea are usually safe.
