(53,093 posts)one poster in particular has gotten for cussing. It seems to depend on what the purpose of the cuss is. If it is to insult women, people of color, and LGBT Americans, then it is proclaimed to be free speech. If it is in response to such a post, that it is uncivil. Funny how that works.
I myself try to avoid cussing (not always successfully) because I know that freedom of speech you benefit from does not extend to me.
PWF, as always.

(17,644 posts)Everyone else still sees what the poster is saying - only now the fool who hit the hide button can't defend themselves nor the position they wanted to advocate

(53,093 posts)and people alert on posts. In fact, the same people talking about freedom of speech take great exception to certain kinds of speech, so much so that they alert on it and seek to have certain posters driven from the site. My point is there is a big fat double standard. The freedom people claim is to insult those they see as inferior to themselves, but they allow no such freedom for the subaltern to speak without censure.

(17,644 posts)and merely relegate DU into insignificance
Don't get me wrong - some post are certainly over the top and need to be hidden. But if some one merely doesn't agree with a particular stance a person has on DU that isn't a reason to use the alert button or attempt to gawd them into writing some thing worth alerting

(16,204 posts)This is a philosophical discussion only. I'm not trying to offend you. If someone uses the expletive "fuck" in phrases such as "this is f'd up" or "that f'ing sucks", it won't get hidden. It's not attacking anyone and while vulgar, is still civil. On the other hand, the combination of that word with "You", focuses the verb at another person such that it is a clear attack and will nearly always be seen as uncivil. Whenever I see a hide that focused on the f word, it's always the latter usage.

(53,093 posts)Simply not true.

(16,204 posts)I've seen them get locked for misogynistic or homophobic words, but not for just plain old vulgar profanity. Now, to qualify this, DU is a 24 hour 7 days a week website, and I'm only on for small bits at any one time. So it's quite possible (and likely) that there are exceptions, but in my experience I have not observed it.
BainsBane
(53,093 posts)Have you ever seen posts hidden for this ?
Probably not, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

(16,204 posts)It was in response to a post that advocated harm to another person in violation of the TOS. It was a good hide.
I saw another in response to someone comparing/calling someone a murderer. That also seemed an appropriate hide.

(34,845 posts)But throwing around vulgar language because one thinks it makes one 'out there' or sees it as equal to 'free speech' is moronic.
Vulgarity bothers me not at all but its use solely to offend and then laugh at those who are offended shows no class and no style.

(42,022 posts)Swearing isn't what this is about. People swear here all the time. I'm better at it than most people, and have no boundaries if I lose my temper. I've been on DU for almost 10 years and with my language I'd have been kicked off ANY reasonably moderated site. So I choose not no. I also choose not to use bigoted language, and I made that choice years ago, because for me, it's wrong. It might be different for others. As far as I'm concerned, people can say what they want and I can object to it as much as I want.
You know what this is? A bunch of hysterical bullshit.
Let's toss in a new word-- courtesy. It's got a couple things going for it. It starts with a 'C' for one.
