I'm guessing a lot of it is due to the fact that (many) parents insist on driving their kids to the bus stop, never mind letting them walk or ride bikes. And nowadays a lot of kids go to school somewhere other than their own neighborhoods, so it might be miles away.

attend schools 12 miles away. We have a school bus system or parents drop them off on their way to work in a town even further away.
