Football, the beautiful game, the religion of entire countries where it is more powerful than real religion, loved throughout the world, in 212 nations of FIFA , though not in the violence loving sporting nations of Canada and America. The disconnect with the rest of the world makes these nations sporting outcasts.
But then again soccer/ football is a communist plot attempting to enslave the world in a UN led cabal of world tyranny.

(167 posts)You do know that American Football, Rugby Football and Soccer Football are thought to have derived from the same game invented somewhere in the British Isles (probably England). That being said the World Cup is great and I love it.

(269,254 posts)Even FIFA corrected their history because there were pigskin footballs in China. Italy actually had earlier versions known as Harpastum and Calcio. What you can argue is that organized association football started in Britain.

(3,746 posts)and then *this* game was popularized around the world.
There is no argument.
Random historical kick abouts need not apply.
malaise
(269,254 posts)outside of England v Scotland matches, it was popularized by those countries who formed FIFA (Jules Rimet of France) and the UK was not one of them. In fact the UK did not join FIFA until 1946 and participated in the World Cup from 1950. FIFA always acknowledged the role of association football in its development. The fact that they corrected their own history suggests it was more than kick about given the pig skin footballs in China.
Indeed the Chinese first made pigskin footballs.

(269,254 posts)Britain, Australia and Qatar all offered gifts to CONCACAF via the FIFA VP Jack Warner.
Don't forget the US guy was also involved in the mess - they are all corrupt.

(27,247 posts)In the 19th century, there were two games in Great Britain that had "football" in their name. One was "rugby football", the other was "association football". "Association" began to be abbreviated as "assoc." and its players were called "assoc'ers". Because of the inclusion of the "a" at the beginning of "assoc'er", the term had a rather vulgar implication, so eventually it was left off and the name became simply "soccer". However, it was decided that rugby football would just be called "rugby" and "assoc. football" would be called "football" in Great Britain. On the other hand, in the US the Americanized version of rugby became known as "football", while "assoc'er" became "soccer".

(269,254 posts)with a Muscular Christian headmaster named Thomas Arnold. He was really the first person to promote sport as a centerpiece of education in England. They invented the game of rugby and you are right - there was association football (and of course cricket) played by the sons of the well to do at the elite 'public schools - which were very private.

(30,253 posts)Yesterday's game was thrilling and I also enjoyed watching my other favorite team win on Sunday. Argentina won 2 - 1 against Bosnia. Messi scored a goal, but the team still needs to gel.
I'm looking forward to watching as many games as I can.
