CNN) -- Casey Kasem, who entertained radio listeners for almost four decades as the host of countdown shows such as "American Top 40" and "Casey's Top 40," died early Sunday, according to a Facebook post from his daughter Kerri Kasem.
Casey Kasem was 82 and had been hospitalized in Washington state for two weeks.
"Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken," Kerri Kasem wrote. "Thank you for all your love, support and prayers. The world will miss Casey Kasem, an incredible talent and humanitarian; we will miss our Dad."
Kerri Kasem said friends and family were by her father's side when he died.

And may his widow, Jean, find healing and support and be able to make peace with Casey's children and the inevitability of this moment.

(135,425 posts)I remember him because his was one of the few shows we could get on AFARTS (Armed Forces Radio and Television Service)...there was really no second "A" in that acronym, but hey...!
Nowadays, you can go anywhere in the world and through the magic of the internet you don't miss much in the way of television and home grown culture, but way, way back in the day, an American radio programme was a taste of the states.

(4,247 posts)I recorded too many songs from the top 40, as I only had money for blank tapes. He always had those human interest stories mixed in, too. It was an interesting show, when radio was king.
I also remember having my mind blown on two counts: first, when I saw what he looked like. It was nothing close to what I imagined from the radio broadcast, so it opened my eyes to how our preconceptions can be shattered. Secondly, when I learned he was the voice of so many cartoon characters that I loved, but had never connected him to. I can never think of the Superfriends without knowing he was Robin.

(13,227 posts)He had a living will that specified that his life not be prolonged by artificial means. His last days were in a hospice with a morphine drip, which is about as humane as can be legally done.
On a side note, some here may not know that he was a big-time progressive. Was very outspoken about the Iraq Wars and was a big time Kucinich supporter.
