On MSNBC tonight, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) virtually declared war on Mitch McConnell after he blocked her student loan bill. Warren told viewers to donate money to Alison Lundergan Grimes, and announced that she will be going to Kentucky to campaign for the Democrat.

(15,480 posts)In the 1959 anti-nuclear, apocalyptic film, "On The Beach", the final shot, after all human life on earth has been killed by nuclear fallout, is a forlorn, tattered banner flapping in the wind on a beautiful, totally silent, sunny day. It carries the warning to the film's audience, "There is still time, Brother."
When it comes to prospective presidents who would save the middle and working classes from the predatory and apocalyptic war being waged on us by the One Percenters and their Big Banks, I see Elizabeth Warren as our last, best hope. There is still time for our economy, but ONLY if we elect a president who is not enamored of or indebted to Wall Street.

(11,495 posts)There is still time, and I would love to see a president Warren, but right now we need to help her by getting rid of the republicans in congress. We need to vote them out of office so when the time comes there would be a congress where democrats are in charge of "both" houses, then, and only then, could she really get something done. As long as republicans control one branch, they will do the same thing they have been doing since president Obama took office, obstructing everything that might help change this country and take it back from the 1%.
If we really want things to get better we have to start regaining control at local, state and national levels, if we don't things will get worse. Every office is important and taking back all the states that we lost in 2010 is a must, along with replacing every republican member of congress we can.
There is still time people, but we have to start now.

(22,271 posts)Neither is Hillary Clinton and neither is anyone else. No one has declared. She picked her words carefully. What hasn't she said? "I will not run for president in 2016." This is how the game is played.
As for me? I'm convinced she's running. I listened to her at the HuffPost conference with Thomas Pikkety and if those weren't stump speeches I don't know what is.
Jackpine Radical
(45,274 posts)she has also shown herself to be a team player who will work for a Dem majority even if it means campaigning for Blue Dogs.
I think it would be very hard for her to decide to run against Hillary, particularly if she sees Hillary as having a better chance of winning than her. I don't think she would want to take the chance of unseating Hillary in the Primary & then going on to be beaten by a Republican clown in the General.
I think she might find it hard to live with herself in that eventuality, watching the country sink under the horrendous policies of another Bush or someone even worse and thinking that her hubris might have brought the monster into power.
Nevertheless, I think she would be a brilliant President.
Le Taz Hot
(22,271 posts)I can see her running against Hillary in the primaries but her method would be something like, "I greatly admire Hillary Clinton . . . BUT, we have some fundamental differences . . ." She's too classy to bash Hillary and, frankly, there are plenty of PACs that will do it for her even if she doesn't approve. If Hillary were to get the nomination yes, she would campaign for her; however, by doing that, she runs the risk of losing credibility among her base because, let's face it, Hillary has never represented anyone but Hillary and the 1%. Warren will have to choose her words very carefully.
It's vital that progressives and Democrats have a choice via the primary process. This whole "Hillary is inevitable" achieves exactly the opposite of what her fan base intends. It's perceived (and actually is) as a coronation which just affirms the fact they aren't being heard. It's hard enough to get people out to the voting booth, even in presidential election years. If people feel their concerns aren't being addressed, and they won't be if Hillary is coronated (spellcheck says that isn't a word), then even more on "our" side will stay home on election day and, unless the Republicans run someone from the Clown Car (something I thought would not happen until Cantor was beaten by a teaklanner), the result will be the Democrats lose the White House.
Jackpine Radical
(45,274 posts)I make the same argument you're advancing here.
Today, however, is Thursday.
Seriously, I have long advocated that the way for Dems to regain ascendence in the long term is for us to present, and then follow through on, a truly progressive agenda: Universal health care, restoring the social safety nets, green energy, a massive public-works program to build a new infrastructure for the new century, etc.
In my first post I wasn't talking about what might be best for the country, but rather, what the psychological dynamics of the situation might be for Liz.
Le Taz Hot
(22,271 posts)And I'm convinced that, after reading her book, she thinks that taking back the government from the 1% will be her priority. I think that she thinks she can win with the issue that the 99% isn't being represented (and it's not) which, in the long run, will not only be good for the country but good for the party. Yes, she's a team player but not at the expense of watching her country and the Democratic Party continue to sell out to the 1%. She has a sense of duty and I believe she'll be true to that.

(25,183 posts)Since 1957, Kentucky has had only two Senators from the Democratic Party, Walter Huddleston (lost his re-election bid in 1984 during the Reagan sweep of Mondale) and Wendell Ford, who was re-elected three times before he retired over fifteen years ago. Both stayed where they were by fiercely defending tobacco interests.
As far as where Elizabeth Warren wants to spend her time, that's up to her. She'd do better for us by directing her time and her supporters' donations to people who could actually take a Senate seat away from the Rethugs. By drawing her into a probably fruitless battle with him, McConnell has taken heat off of much more vulnerable Republicons.
Wendell Ford is the second-longest serving US Senator from Kentucky in the state's history. The first? Mitch McConnell.

(15,480 posts)Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell trails his Democratic opponent, Alison Lundergan Grimes, by 4 points in a new poll published Thursday night by Kentuckys largest newspaper.
The survey also found President Barack Obama to be slightly more popular than the longtime incumbent senator in the red state.
The Louisville Courier-Journal poll, a robo-poll conducted by SurveyUSA, gave McConnell 42 percent to Grimes 46 percent, adding to Democrats hopes of a competitive race.

(6,241 posts)20 years ago is to stop giving federal aid to colleges that raise their tuition more than the rate of inflation. The reason tuition is so high is that someone is willing to pay it. People are willing to go into debt to the government for the rest of their lives for an education. You take away the money and the customers, universities will have to lower their rates to reasonable levels.

(802 posts)...see signs at Grimes rallies that simply say 'I'll Have Turtle Soup'..and toward the end of her campaign, with a Grimes victory secured, a clip of Paul Newman from Cool Hand Luke where he's holding a snapping turtle - clamped down on a stick - where Luke says 'Here he is Cap, deader'n hell but won't let go.' Play that at her victory celebration where he, undoubtedly, would never have 'conceded'.

(5,795 posts)Yes - as long as loans are necessary, let's get students and their parents those loans at the lowest rates possible. However, we also need to look at what can be done to get costs down so students and their parents don't have to borrow any money.
We, as a nation, also need to do a better job of educating consumers that their local community college often offers the same kinds of courses offered by for-profit colleges with slick-advertising.
RainDog
(28,784 posts)We'd also have more restrictions on who gets that money - at least that's how it plays out in western Europe.
I think a "sliding fee scale" would be a good way to make college affordable and have more fairness, combined with tax support for the major land grant universities, etc. that are anchors for research and job opportunities for people in the states where they are located.
Right now, imo, universities pay too much to administrators while using "adjuncts" - with PhDs, teaching classes so that senior faculty has the time to write grants to pay for administrative staff in depts, equipment, etc. That's how it works now - and it's not working for those who are not paid a living wage, have no job security, no health care benefits - yet they are dedicated to teaching because they love a subject and want to pass that along to students.
Even within depts - if someone is in a field that can get big grant money to pay for equipment, etc. - those people are favored over others doing theoretical research that only requires a pencil and piece of paper, or chalkboard - that's in the hard sciences.
We've taken a wrong turn when our nation decided everything's worth had to be evaluated based upon current market value. In the case of theoretical research - it may not pay out at the moment, but it's the sort of thing that creates millions of jobs in the future. But, even so, that's not enough when a university is run like a corporation that has to only care about quarterly profits.
