(snip)
Here's Pelosi's statement below:
The American people should take notice. Tonight, the Tea Party defeated Republican Leader Eric Cantor who is one of the most extreme Members of Congress.
Eric Cantor has long been the face of House Republicans extreme policies, debilitating dysfunction and manufactured crises. Tonight, is a major victory for the Tea Party as they yet again pull the Republican Party further to the radical right.
As far as the midterms elections are concerned, its a whole new ballgame.

(80,693 posts)Glad you're here! Very festive night, isn't it! I'm so happy to see his smug mug on the losing end for a change. He really was alienating! His whole cocky, arrogant demeanor just was SO off-putting! How anyone got anything done with him, without winding up nursing some sort of bruised feelings or grudges. I'll bet people "worked with" him begrudgingly because he had that hotshot position in Congress. Majority Leader in the House. The presumed heir to boner's seat in the Speakership. And buh-BYE. Just like that.
Really rather stunning.

(653 posts)I really enjoyed what Joan Walsh of Salon.com had to say about Cantor's political demise: "It couldnt happen to a more deserving guy. Cantor is another conscience-free Republican leader who courted the Tea Party when it seemed politically advantageous and then tried to run from it when it was clear it was going to bite him in the ass."
The Tea Party may target more of these whores (there are plenty of them). But his opponent, while not a knuckle-dragger, IS an extremist; perhaps too extreme for general consumption. We'll see. At any rate, Democrats will need to turn out full force to vote if we are to prevail.

(14,449 posts)especially on immigration and religious things. Democrats better work hard if they want to win this seat. The District is 56 percent Republican. Get out to vote is very important. Money in this race is not as important as getting out to vote. This guy won by spending 100,000 dollars to 5 million by Cantor.

Think about it, if the tea party starts to take the house, then Karl Marx would not be able to move things to the left!
Much less Hillary.

(3,596 posts)Cantor was apparently not whacko enough for the GOP base in his district. Granted there are reports there were a lot of Democrats that voted in the open primary yesterday which could have contributed to Cantor's loss.
But there is nothing in Brat's victory that suggests Democrats have a better chance of flipping the seat in a heavily gerrymandered "safe" GOP district or that this reflects any more fundamental changes in the election. Brat is as whacko or more than Cantor.

(13,901 posts)There are factions in the Republican party. There's the money, and then there's the religious, and then theres the libertarian/teabaggers. Money didn't want Cantor out, and they just lost a good chunk of their investment. They are used to being the true force behind the throne, and they won't forget having their noses shoved in it. What direction they will take with that experience is anyone's guess. But it won't be forgotten.

(13,901 posts)All in all its a mass of yuck that you dont want to touch. But just because theres Oil, Turds, water, and McDonalds wrappers all swirling around together doesn't mean that its a homogenous mass. Each item is still separate to some extent. And each element wants to believe they are in charge, and each element wants to be in charge. Money has long ruled the roost, and they won't quickly forget being jilted. Its been happening a bit lately. I believe it has a lot to do with why so much money is also being sent over to our side of the aisle.

(910 posts)Cantor's leadership PAC, Every Republican Is Crucial, handed out more than $1.6 million to federal candidates in the current election more than any other leadership PAC, according to a tally by the non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics. He helped establish the YG Network, a conservative non-profit group with an affiliated super PAC that can raise unlimited sums to influence politics.

(4,711 posts)Primaries are where the people who really care are the only ones who come out to vote. On the Republican side, these people are all certifiably insane. So when the people who actually have better things to think about in the course of their everyday lives finally get to the voting booth, their options have been decided in advance by crazy people. Is it any wonder that some folks think voting is a waste of time?
Still... if the choice is between a Democrat and a frothing-at-the-mouth lunatic, maybe some moderate R's will defect. It's worth hoping for anyway.

(135,425 posts)All politics is local. The fact that Cantor's opponent didn't come down squarely in favor of a minimum wage needs to be exploited.
Find those Republicans working at or near minimum wage--and target them with how their candidate really feels about THEIR paychecks.
