We're visiting our daughter in a small town near Boston.
We live 1500 miles away on the Alabama gulf coast.
Only a couple of friends have her phone number and know we're here.
Got back to her house a few days ago and there was a phone message on her land line.
For me.
From an 877 toll free number.
I looked it up online.
A real estate company in Ft. Myers, FL.
How did they get my daughter's number?
I called.
The lady wanted to know if we had filed a damages claim for the BP oil spill in the gulf a couple of years ago. We had.
Her company files such claims (for a fee).
"How did you get my daughter's number?"
"THEY gave it to me."
"THEY being someone in your office?"
"Yes."
"How did they get it?"
"I'm sorry, I don't know. They just give me a list of numbers. If they can't get in contact with the individual, they call closest kin."
Peolple I don't know know TOO much about me.

(14,733 posts)probably looked her up online in a way similar to how you did. There are a number of websites out there that list you by all of your known addresses and phone numbers, and throw in links 'known relations' (that may or may not actually be such).

(3,580 posts)45 years ago I was a skip tracer for a collection agency briefly, we would call neighbors, family etc. Not hard to do, I believe businesses know way more about you than the government does.
