One might expect that last weekends shooting of a couple of police officer and an innocent bystander by some far-right extremists would naturally result in some soul searching by conservatives. Its far from the first time in recent years that its been revealed that heavily armed, anti-government ideologues were responsible for a killing spree. One of the more famous was the man who shot up a church in Tennessee back in 2008 claiming in his manifesto that it was out of his hatred for certain of his fellow Americans:
Adkisson stated that he had targeted the church because of its liberal teachings and his belief that all liberals should be killed because they were ruining the country, and that he felt that the Democrats had tied his countrys hands in the war on terror and they had ruined every institution in America with the aid of major media outlets. Needless to say, he and his wife wound up at the Bundy Ranch and were, tellingly, just two among a number of well-armed volunteers who were deemed too volatile even for that crowd and they were sent packing.
But never let it be said that the right wing isnt deeply concerned about the threat posed by extremism and domestic terrorism. They are on it. On the same morning that this violent event happened, the conservative website Townhall was sounding the alarm about the mortal peril we are all in from the fanatics in our midst:
