(10,056 posts)And the quote attributed is not referenced. Not saying that the article is wrong, but I'm curious as to the context especially since most pols and voters in this country had many of the same views.
Has Yusuf changed his thinking since? That is what I'm most interested in hearing.

(52,172 posts)was about recruiting gays in 1995?

(10,056 posts)Gay rights was not a position supported by any mainstream pols or voters.
In fact most of the anti-gay state constitutional amendments started up during this period.
On a national level, DOMA and 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' were accepted policies.
And education about gays in school? Not an ounce of support. So yes, I would say your question is more of a statement.
dsc
(52,172 posts)so yes, I do remember the mid 1990's and no I don't really recall politicians going round saying that teaching about gay history in school would lead to a loss of innocence.

(10,056 posts)Here in KY gay teachers were considered a threat to students. Gay history wasn't even on the radar. Major pols in both parties supported limiting gay rights just like those at the national level.
My point is that comments by Yusuf in 1995 were common across the political spectrum.
Do you consider Bill Clinton anti-gay today? He certainly was in the 1990s.
People change, some in the most surprising ways.
dsc
(52,172 posts)that is my point. Even relatively anti gay politicians didn't say those things.

(10,056 posts)It's worse.
Islam's statement was his 'opinion' at the time.
Clinton's support and signing of a law set back gay marriage rights a generation.
So which is more extreme to you? An ex-pop stars admittedly shitty opinion or a president supporting a law that denies recognition and legal rights to gay couples?
I cannot believe people are conveniently overlooking that fact. Wait, it's DU. Yes, I can believe that. It is par for the course on DU. Some days, I miss UnRec.

I suspect the reasoning is craven Christians talk about the end of the world and how peace will cause the end of the world and they keep pushing it off. Not sure if I wanna be working against God's Will. Always find it interesting how people who are Jewish are more willing to talk to those who are peace loving Muslim's than those of the crazies. But so called Christians don't. Yet they root for a Mormon.
Okay whatever and I love his newer music.

Universally derided in 1989 when he allegedly went on record supporting the Ayatollah Khomeini's death sentence against The Satanic Verses author Salman Rushdie. Stevens's records were burned and taken out of stores, and many radio stations permanently boycotted his music. Nearly a decade later, Stevens claimed he was highly misquoted, that he didn't support the Ayatollah's sentence. Rather, he merely reiterated the Koran's teachings about those who "defame the prophet." Stevens says he bears no ill will towards Rushdie, and did not wish for him to be killed.
