He should have been advised of legal problems before he committed the crime. Probably was the same justice before he committed the crimes as it is today. Its too late to cry now.

is from a NYT editorial suggesting a plea deal to reduce "punishment."

<...>

Considering the enormous value of the information he has revealed, and the abuses he has exposed, Mr. Snowden deserves better than a life of permanent exile, fear and flight. He may have committed a crime to do so, but he has done his country a great service. It is time for the United States to offer Mr. Snowden a plea bargain or some form of clemency that would allow him to return home, face at least substantially reduced punishment in light of his role as a whistle-blower, and have the hope of a life advocating for greater privacy and far stronger oversight of the runaway intelligence community.

<...>

A lot has happened since then, including Snowden going on NBC and digging himself into a deeper hole when he admitted, in his own words, that he took damaging information and distributed it. The only thing he could say in his defense is that the recipients promised not to reveal the information.

Ellsberg inadvertently makes the case for why Snowden should have stayed in the U.S.
