Complete article at linkSexual assaults on the male population has increased by 75% in that area, she continued. That kind of statistic makes maximum security prisons look like the minor league. One of the things we ran into while working up there was a 15 year old boy had gone missing. He was found in one of the Man Camps with one of the oil workers. They were passing him around from trailer to trailer.
He went there looking for a job and was hired by individuals within the Man Camp to do light cleaning in and around their personal areas. The young teenager was forced into sex slavery. Its the kind of thing you hear about in the ghettos of third world countries; not in the quiet and remote countryside.
The victims arent just males but females too. Everyone has heard by now of the missing school teacher that was kidnapped as she was out jogging, repeatedly sexually assaulted, and murdered near one of these Man Camps. The age of the Man Camp victims varies. The assailants are not necessarily looking for male and female adults. They are also going after little girls.

Coincidentally, I'm reading "The Round House", by Louise Erdich of the Ojibwe tribe right now. It's a novel about an Ojibwe woman who was raped by a white man on the Ojibwe reservation in North Dakota. It's a really good story and she's a great writer.

(86,622 posts)even on this web site, about the dangers of taking work in that area. Not only are these people coming from desperate situations, also arrive armed to the teeth. This I have heard from some who went and came right back and others who own property there.
There's just no sense of humanity in such places.
And what prompted me to respond to your post is that you mentioned Louise Erdich. I read one of her books a few years ago and still cannot forget the majority of it. She is a very good writer.
"Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse" couldn't put it down, didn't want to get to the end... my definition of a good book and a great author.
I'll have to read the others.

(53,661 posts)When the Man Camps are all closed and the pipelines in place, the workers will bring misery wherever they land next. Not the kind of neighbor one will ever be able to trust or be safe living around. No doubt they'll be well armed, too and able to afford to move into many communities to repeat what they did there. I'm glad the police officer had a chance to speak out in that venue. Did natives vote for this in their area?
