Dutch intern reveals Amsterdam’s postwar shame

Imagine you had survived one of the Nazi death camps, but on returning home found that you owed the city council back rents and taxes on the house the Nazis had stolen from you, and to add insult to injury, had to pay fines for late payment.

That is exactly what happened to 217 Amsterdam Jews, and now the city is considering compensating them .

“They were completely expropriated. And then, after the Second World War, they were taxed for the period in which they didn’t enjoy the house, and where they had not the ownership of the house. And not only were they taxed, they had also to pay fines on it,” says the former director of the Centre for Information and Documentation on Israel, Ronnie Nathaniel.

The scandal came to light four years ago when part-time interns combing through the city archives came across letters of complaint. After a lonely four-year battle one intern, Charlotte van den Berg, has today obtained public recognition.

Hundreds of Jews were murdered upon returning to Poland and in other countries, there are allegations of similar things happening as in The Netherlands. Hell, in the US, the McCarthy Era sought out "subversive" Jews.

Some things never change. There are many out there still regretting Hitler wasn't more through and they don't all shoot up Jewish centers or fire bomb synagogues.

I think the anti semitism in America alone - is far more rampant than folks would like to admit.

Many just find new and more creative ways to be Jew haters. Many like to change the subject or make fun of anti-Semitism, or try to redefine it. It bears a striking resemblance to the way some try to minimize or mock racism by pointing out we have a black president, screaming about "reverse racism," or, as seen recently, claiming how good the slaves really had it.

I walk this world as a black woman. It's the world I inhabit. But for some reason - I have a fear of self identifying with my ethnic and religious heritage - i.e. Passover at one of my maternal great grandmother's homes. You know why? I agree with everything you just wrote. I don't put it out there - until someone thinks they are being 'cute' and forces me to speak up. You would be amazed at some of the things I've heard raised in the Baptist church, attending a high school and university that were Catholic - and it's no wonder I ran to the Unitarian Church. You really want to get sick? Read that 'illuminati conspiracy' bullshit. It's Stormfront on speed.

Though white (well, kind of, depending on whom you talk to**), I have African-American nieces. The number of times of have heard racist jokes or comments, which are always confronted by me, is outrageous. I usually just pull out a picture of my beautiful nieces and ask, "Aren't they gorgeous and don't you feel stupid?" My partner of 12 years hears homophobic shit all the time because they don't know or realize he is gay. I never had that problem.

I don't know if you saw this post in GD, but it really speaks to some of what we are discussing, a "soft racism (other -isms)" of sorts. To me, it speaks to a lack of understanding or concern. It is similar to white folk coming along and telling you what is and isn't racist (I get that as a Jew and a gay person, in regards to anti-Semitism and homophobia, respectively) or refusing to see your point. The worst ones are the "liberals/progressives", who in order to hide their own deep-seated bigotry, try to distract by making false claims against you or others like you.

I have seen the "Illuminati Conspiracy" shit, and, in actuality, the history of it is quite fascinating, shitty, but interesting. If you really want to take a walk on the wild side, read, The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion. Now, that shit is crazy, and even worse, is used by so-called "lefties," though they know it is a forgery.

**I don't know if you saw the comments from right-wing sites about the shootings at the Jewish centers in Kansas, but when the identities were still not known, many white supremacists listed the deaths as "killed, were two whites and a Jew (if they were nice)." Of course, there were those who claimed he (the shooter) was really "advancing the Zionist agenda" or it was really a "Mossad attack." The "best" one was it was a "false flag planned by the Jew Obama to grab guns." Who knew?! LOL!

Very interesting. Very interesting indeed. One of the Usual Suspects that the AA members deal with regularly just HAD to pop into it. Truly - that one will never get it because he's very comfy with his belief system. And I will check out The Protocols.

How evil can you be to hate someone just because of their religion, skin color, etc.

Definitely a screw loose somewhere in people like this!!!!

it is simply an easier method of controlling the population through a divide and conquer methodology. I think it is at least in part setting up a group as the scape goat for all the ills of a community or nation(s) and just feeding the fire. The use of the "Look over there, that group has more than you or if that group of insert group name didn't do X then your life would be easeir and you would have more."

of extermination at the hands of the Nazis, why was their property not fully restored after the demise of the Third Reich?
Europe's underlying anti Antisemitism demanded the Jews be shipped off to a place in the desert that no one else wanted, that is until the Europe's expatriated Jews arrived in Israel.
