"We find after years of struggle that we do not take the trip; the trip takes us."

(12,448 posts)the things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling, are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest, are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first they love the produce of the second."

(12,448 posts)Why we choose to elevate the worst scum on earth, while ignoring the truly great is the creating the mechanism of our demise.
Steinbeck, Guthrie, Seeger, Al Lewis, etc. all told us what was and what is. That we choose to ignore it and pretend that all is well, says so much more about us than we are ready to acknowledge.

We're beset by morons on all sides, some call us friends and others call us enemies, but none of them seem to have any concept of what is, or could be, beyond the confines of their narrow little rooms.

(12,448 posts)Steinbeck had a way to speak to everyone. All I find today is focus-group tested dreck mashed into a vaguely vanilla flavored slop, served up on a tin plate.
I've found writers with great ideas for telling great stories, but the actual words on the page are inadequate, at best. Like reading a paper written by a talented 12 year old.
Is it the publishing houses? The fact that no one wants to pay editors anymore? What?

Thanks for the reply.
