Dr. Randy Morris, a licensed physician specializing in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, wants to build a fertility clinic at the northwest corner of the intersection that would provide services such as fertility medications, insemination, in-vitro fertilization and surgical procedures like unblocking fallopian tubes. The clinic would serve patients from around the suburbs.

By its very nature of buying and selling, IVF procedures are treating human embryos as a commodity or an industry where the women who donate their eggs are merely the suppliers, North Central senior Mary Kizior said. Knowingly or not, this is an industry that preys on the financial vulnerability of my female peers.

Matt Yonke, assistant communications director for the Pro-Life Action League, warned the clinic would spur protests similar to those that occurred at the Planned Parenthood in Aurora.
I read this with minimal interest until I read "...an industry that preys on the financial vulnerability of my female peers." It's obvious a woman of college age isn't wise enough to know whether or not she wants to sell her eggs.
Besides all that, I have one child, a son. I had him naturally. My sister could never have children and battled with the decision of whether to adopt or use medical procedures. She did neither, due to procrastination and a hectic life. I have a close friend who can't have children. She's going through the same internal battle. Yes, there are way too many children in the world that need families, but I would not deny a (reasonable...think Octomom) woman's right to choose a medical procedure to have a biological child. In our world, it's okay to force a life to continue (Schiavo), but now we have people telling women that they aren't allowed to have a child.
I never had to decide. It's not my place to tell another woman what to do. I honestly hurt for the women in this world that can't have children. It's an amazing journey. Adoption is always a beautiful option, but this is another. This is all insane. When did a woman's body become public property?

(3,521 posts)do not avail yourself of their services. Their moral feelings do not allow them to dictate what others may do.

(53,661 posts)It has been for most of human history as far as the powerful and the priest say.
We also have those who insist on control for genetics and making cannon fodder.
Neither of which respects women.
We have had an experiment in holding to an idea of individual freedom in this country, and apparently the powerful and the priests have decided it is time to end that experiment.
I think I was hoping someone could put this into a logical perspective. You nailed it, but in the most depressing way.

(53,661 posts)Taking them away. I miss that sense of becoming something better than the past, and embracing all of humanity and all life in the world with respect. Things are going to the other end now; but we will have to make a new road, lose some things and figure out how to gain others.

As far as I'm concerned, that should be the default position on this, it's very well expressed. Or the rant by Nance Greggs:

I'm actually impressed by how many men are getting into this battle. I've even heard from some local Republican men that think all this is not only unnecessary and political posturing, but insane.

(11,360 posts)... a patient has to pay for would also qualify as something that "objectifies human life". Somehow I doubt that they want to ban the practice of medicine in Naperville.
The women who donate eggs, like people who donate blood or bone marrow or a kidney, should be fully informed about the procedures they consent to. They're not children, and should be treated as competent to make their own choices.

(8,492 posts)All those little spermatozoa being objectified by those poor misled men at sperm donation clinics!! THE HORROR!!
Yeah, won't hear that outcry anytime soon.

(53,661 posts)I was never the type that she plays in that movie, or any of those women. I was terminally serious, almost morbid. Now that I'm getting older, I feel free to be silly.

(46,039 posts)I couldn't have a child when I wanted to. I can tell you that trying to conceive and not being able to was only third in emotional misery to losing my mother at 13 and being raped at 20. It's utter agony.
I ended up not having children at all, which wasn't the end of the world. Being sterile is way easier than being infertile. I hope I'm explaining that well enough for people to understand.

(8,492 posts)I was lucky to have my son. I tried for 20 more years to have another. 5 miscarriages later, I gave up. I would have been happier if the doctor told me I "couldn't" have anymore instead of it would be "difficult" to have more. Although, I watched my sister go through an emotional hell. I had my son. I carried an enormous amount of guilt for many, many years. We had difficult childhoods, also, which made us incredibly close.
It's amazing what the human soul can endure. The pain we can suffer and still manage to find joy.

(14,856 posts)in which we don't have to hear about yet another group of assholes striving to deprive women of our right to make our own fucking decisions about our own bodies? Every single day it's another assault.
This is beyond depressing.

(8,492 posts)I'm used to the abortion battle, but all of this added on insanity is pushing me over the edge. I can't wait until they propose chastity belts for gradeschool girls.
What I'm truly impressed with is how so many men are just as disgusted as women are. They've come a long way, baby!
