Nipped *that* in the bud, I hope

Last edited Tue Feb 18, 2014, 12:32 PM - Edit history (1)

Caught our son listening to The Beatles tonight, I saw her standing there

It was bad.

She was just 17
You know what I mean?
And the way she looked
Was way beyond compare
So how could I dance with another?
"Woooh!"
I saw her standing there

Selecting a dance partner on the basis of looks? 17? And that "woooh" was pretty menacing.

Shut that down, right quick.

Told him to stick to instrumentals until we can sort through our music to see what's more reasonable for him. We gave him some polkas and chamber music to tide him over.

As the boy started listening to the new music we gave him, he began to weep uncontrollably, tears dripping down onto his loose-fitting unisex pantsuit. Tears of joy, I think, in recognition of our growing maturity as a civilization.

McCartney wrote the song after seeing two monkeys copulating in the street while on retreat in Rishikesh, India, with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He marvelled in the simplicity of this natural scenario when compared to the emotional turmoil of human relationships. He later said:

"A male [monkey] just hopped on the back of this female and gave her one, as they say in the vernacular. Within two or three seconds he hopped off again and looked around as if to say, ‘It wasn't me,’ and she looked around as if there'd been some mild disturbance ... And I thought ... that's how simple the act of procreation is ... We have horrendous problems with it, and yet animals don't."

Several years ago, my first time in Santa Fe, before I went to sleep my first night, I found what seemed to be a public radio station and set my radio alarm to go off on that station at 7am, if I recall correctly.

7am to 8am was polka music. OMG! I defy ANYONE not to be cheerful and energetic after waking up to polka music! Best music ever.

Not that I ever found the polka hour again, nor have I listened to much polka music in the years since. Sigh.

In Wisconsin the Saturday and Sunday morning polka shows were a tradition when I was growing up, both on the radio and TV. Now, you can find an occasional radio station that has a Sunday morning program, but rarely.

When we vacation in the more sparsely populated northwoods of the state, there is a radio station that does a Sunday morning polka show. I used to share this joy with my sons, hoping they would grow up loving the stuff like I do.

Nope. They were not amused. Neither was my husband, but he always went along with it just to annoy the teens in the back seat. You might be able to resist the polka temptation, but you can never resist the temptation to annoy annoying teenagers.

Oddly, back when we lived in an apartment, our Mexican neighbors blared Mexican polkas through the walls on Sunday morning as they got ready for church. I was cool with it, but my husband insisted we remove ourselves to the other bedroom in short order.

I'm not a "manny follower" but I think most of the people who i.d. with him see themselves as farther to the left than American political culture has a place for at this time. I rarely comment on his posts, etc.

The thread he posted in response to the watermelon/African American history month - I didn't have anything to say about any of that, but I took his thread as a parody of his own culture - I assume he's Jewish, but maybe not. So, he was identifying with the way his cultural history gets associated with particular foods, even if he doesn't consume them himself. I didn't take it to mean an insult, iow, and, it seems, when he realized some did take it as an insult, he apologized.

But maybe I'm wrong. I tend to assume people here are not trying to be offensive and I try to extend a generosity toward others here that I would like to have extended toward myself until someone makes it a point to insult me directly, which, fwiw, many women and men have done who have formed a clique on this site. Then I will give back what I get until I decide not to bother any more.

I also understood people who said the stereotype is more accurately about southern culture, not African American culture - because white people in the south eat the same foods - and tho "grits" may more often be associated with white southern culture - well, every white person I knew growing up ate watermelon and chicken. But I would never say this on such a thread b/c I didn't think that was really the point - the point was associating all African Americans with southern culture alone.

In this thread, Manny was taking what some people perceive here from others who seem to "get the vapors" over current culture - and, apparently, that joke has some currency here.

It wasn't a mean post, but it was a funny one in the context of the latest argument that goes on often here between a few insistent people on both sides, and others who comment on the moment.

Because what I have seen on this board in relation to some who discuss feminism is nothing more than conventional attitudes toward females dressed up as "objectification." No always, tho. but there are more than a few who meet this description, to me.

But I sure see all the "yay, a sexist lyric! It's funny!" crap…..

Music is full of violence against women. Rock and Blues, and Appalachian mountains/Old Time fiddle and banjo tunes often sing about killing women.

It's interesting historically, and good tunes should be loved; but it's also important to understand messages and how ideas that used to be accepted without question do change. Same way we examine and denounce media messages of unregulated capitalism, "safe" fracking or racism.

This is just an attempt to mock the problem of sexism.

PS well, I saw the gefilte fish post…didn't check all your stuff, though. Really need to get offline.
BUT, regardless of whether or not you posted a shtick mocking African Americans, I see you have the good sense to distance yourself from any such thing. In other words, you know very well that doing such a thing--being racist-- is not O.K.

But, with regard to sexism….you're not showing any awareness that there's anything wrong with it. Even your apologia is self-serving. "Of course it's wrong. Of course we must deal with gender-ism! But I'm just making a joke to point out that you're all over-the-top".

But this post we're currently in-- you're just mocking the discussions that have been going on here because of a number of T&A trolly flame-bait posts lately. And topping it off by throwing an insult at me. (accusing me and others of projection)

I saw the gefilte fish post….actually, I didn't find it offensive (but I hadn't looked at the comments in the watermelon/fried chicken threads, so I wasn't aware that there was a blow-up; I didn't make the connection. Also, I grew up Jewish, so self-deprecating Jewish humor is nothing new to me. I always thought it was funny.)

Anyway, I'm sick of this shit. I think I made a good point above when I said

"regardless of whether or not you posted a shtick mocking African Americans, I see you have the good sense to distance yourself from any such thing. In other words, you know very well that doing such a thing--being racist-- is not O.K.

"

There's a WORLD of difference in the tone of the gefilte fish post (it was self-deprecating humor). The "nip this in the bud" post is a mockery of women who feel used and insulted by not only T&A crap in public, but also, by the CRAPPY attitude of its defenders. He takes a real problem and reductio ad absurdam, makes it a story that insults women. Featuring ridiculous women objecting to everything to the point of idiocy.

Suffragettes and second wave feminists were mocked in the same way, tarred as a group of ignorant hags, moralizing prudes, over-reacting, man hating…etc. etc. you know the drill.

And that kind of repeated INSULT, intended to shut out women who don't like the game, is totally accepted.

OK…well, we're not gonna solve it right this red-hot minute, and I have to get offline.

Thanks, bettyellen!

say WOW, I wasn't aware it's a thing to you African American , and BTW- why don't you get over it? Is both condescending and pretty ignorant. But you can see that's exactly how that's how entitled he feels. To mock, and then sort of apologize and ask to be taken seriously on shit he doesn't give two shits about. Hadn't given it a thought prior, except to mock it. Unless he's satirizing himself for being full of hot air, it ain't funny.

Basically, that's the take on feminist issues- can't be bothered to even understand WTF he is gassing off about. It's pretty bizarre. His take is exactly the same as people who spew hatred here- that's not actually satire, it's copycatting sexist bullshit. It actually works better as satire of MRA idiots. To cap it off, everything is served with a side of condesendenton, in case we missed he's trying to assign everyone their place here. Yeah, I know the drill, we're supposed to not realize you were mocking feminists here until you explain the next day- WTF really? Who needed that explained? What is flying over who's head here, LOL.

No...I don't suppose you are.

I am willing to bet that the intent of the OP isn't to mock anyone but DU as a whole.

If you have been here any length of time at all, you know this board and its members have a tendency to get riled up over specific subjects and this latest flood of threads is indicative of that.

This week it was the Sports Illustrated cover.

Soon it will be Hooters again.

Then it will be circumcision.

Then breast feeding in public.

Ad infinitum.

Take it for what it is. Satire.

mock·ing
ˈmäkiNG/
adjective
adjective: mocking

1.
making fun of someone or something in a cruel way; derisive.
"the mocking hostility in his voice made her wince"

So you think the OP was "cruel" ? Was it "derisive"?

I suppose it is all in the eye of the reader.

There is a very good reason I do not post in most of the flame war/controversial topic threads.
The same reason that, though I call myself a Heretic and I am indeed an Atheist, I rarely post in the Religion forum.

It's because I have had all these arguments years ago and I now see them as tedious.

I apologize if that isn't "progressive" enough for you.

On the other hand, I just don't give a damn.

Now, knowing this board as well as I do, that statement alone will get SOMEONE thinking, if not saying, that I am a misogynist because of it. And that is also indicative of how absurd this board has become.

I lost the password to my account and when I tried to make a new account with DU3, the new verification crap was glitching and I lost patience with it and I just started using his account.

It doesn't matter how old your child/children get they will ALWAYS be your child/children.

My daughter is 28 and yes, she's still my child. I gave birth to her & raised her so she is my child always and forever. Whether she lives with me or not--she doesn't.

Same goes for my 22 year old son.

I'm a pretty laid back person I usually brush most shit off. BUT if you go after my child/children it's on.

That is beyond low. Attack the OP no reason to go after his son.

The Bathroom Window was from Abbey Road.

By the time Abbey Road rolled around, they couldn't even manage writing whole songs, it seems. John and Paul just stitched together several partial songs for You Never Give Me Your Money/Here Comes the Sun King/Mean Mr. Mustard/Polyethlene Pam/She Came in Through the Bathroom Window/Golden Slumbers.

....but it still turned out pretty dang good for their final album.

My favorite line from Abbey Road is the short bit at the end

"And in the end...the love you take, is equal to the love..you make."

P.S. I am a Beatles fan....lolol.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10024472335

I can't try to identify 'intent' by a poster at DU - but I think once again - what gets said in PM's and in other places away from DU in speaks volumes.

Just in case you forgot - this was *I think* in response to black Americans and specifically those at DU (to include this star member) being kind of about a school celebrating black history month by serving 'stereotypical' foods. I think MrScorpio did a pretty good job - if anyone is interested in digging into this stereotype of pointing out just why the school was being ignorant.

Then the same poster posted an apology.

Okay - so in the 'margins' we all sort of discussed it and well - it's like when someone says, "Hey no offense!" after making a joke about black people around black people.

You wink, smile, maybe even nod your head - but that individual is never to be respected again. Polite is one thing- respect or taking seriously is another.

In real life - nothing to do with DU or even this thread - just in real life I tend to treat those people that I encounter as too wet to step on and too low to kick because they *think* they've gotten away with something but then I can always come to DU and ridicule them or snicker and giggle about it with my husband.

Just snicker and giggle - because you aren't crazy. That happened. We both know it happened. And from this distance it seems so obvious . . .

This OP is a sarcastic slam at feminists here. That you lack the courage to admit it changes nothing. I know you'd prefer people believe you didn't also mock African Americans who are insulted by watermelon jokes by devoting an OP to doing just that- but that horse left the barn. You can't Unring those bells and pretend you're not belittling good people here. It happened. And here you are again.

song recorded by the Coasters, Get An Ugly Girl To Marry You in '63. Lyrics:
Chorus:
If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life,
Never make a pretty woman your wife.
So from my personal point of view,
Get an ugly girl to marry you.

Chorus

A pretty woman makes her husband look small,
And very often causes his downfall.
As soon as he marries her, then she starts,
To do the things that will break his heart.

But if you make an ugly woman your wife,
You'll be happy for the rest of your life.
An ugly woman cooks meals all the time,
She'll always give you peace of mind.

Chorus

Don't let your friends say you have no taste,
Go ahead and marry anyway.
Her face is ugly, her eyes don't match.
Take it from me, she's a better catch.

Chorus

Say, man?
Hey baby!
I saw your wife the other day.
Yeah?
Yeah, and she's sure is ugly. Ha!
Yeah, she's ugly, but she sure can cook, baby!
Yeah, alright.
Unfortunately, she has acne.
That's a shame, baby.
Yeah, baby.

And I suppose a 17 year old of today knows more than one of 1963. the younger generation actually does make friends with members of the opposite sex first. A lot of progress has occurred in real life people. Naturally men of 1963 were fully privileged and once they married her, could expect her to be what they wanted her to be rather than herself.

sexual repression. Sexual repression is regressive, not progressive.

My wife is the perfect 'feminist'. When I met her, she drove a nicer car than I did, in fact she still does. She only wears makeup when she goes to work, otherwise not (she doesn't need it to look hot). She has always been sexually aggressive and is extremely feminine. She is an alpha female and a workaholic. She enjoys attention from men, and knows how to get what she wants. She is also extremely loyal as a spouse. She is the best of all worlds, IMHO.

She is scared of mice though. Seriously, if she sees a mouse she screams to high heaven....just like that cartoon wife standing on the chair in the kitchen. I love everything about her.

Are those who deliberately choose to misunderstand and/or oppose equality, who insist on making caricatures out of feminist ideas because they are desperate to hang on to or prop up privilege. Laci Green makes videos about sex. Obviously she isn't suggesting repression. She begins the video by talking about how she wants to promote sex positivity. That should have been clear to anyone who understands the English language. Laci's point was about women acting as subjects, just as men do, rather than objects. Remember the bit about acting rather than being acted upon? Anyone who learned how to diagram sentences, which I'm guessing you are old enough to have done, should know the difference between a subject and an object. In her analogy, the object is the scissors and she is the subject. The object exists for her to do something to, just as the media presents women as objects for male pleasure rather subjects acting according to their own sexual interests.

Amazing, it is possible to have a full sex life without reducing women to objects. It's possible to enjoy sex without elevating the profits of corporate capitalism above human rights. Believe it or not, it's not being sexually uptight to oppose pedophilia or rape, or support the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as it is used to combat sexual harassment and a hostile work environment. As much as you find it difficult to comprehend, your sexuality is not intrinsically linked to capitalist commodity fetishism. Human beings did manage to procreate before Sports Illustrated and rape porn. I know that concept is shocking to some around here. They can't image a human existence before they took their instructions of what to think and feel about women from corporate media conglomerates. Nonetheless, people have been happily having sex for thousands of years.

If you still make that comment about sexual repression after watching the video, it's clear that you choose not to understand.

258. Objectification goes all ways
Tue Feb 18, 2014, 05:30 PM
Feb 2014

People dont like OTHER peoples objectification, but everyone does it. Men objectify women, women objectify men. Gay men objectify other gay men and lesbians objectify other lesbians.

Folks always have and always will objectify people they are attracted to. The urge to objectify is universal, and so long as it's fairly and respectfully indulged, it's not offensive, not a problem, and not news.

Feminism also objectifies women, but in a different way.

The 'sexual repression of heterosexuality' comment had nothing to do with the video. It has to do with the ongoing message pushed in these 'gender wars' threads.

Just my 2 cents....

or you don't want to understand. Because if you had, you wouldn't continue to repeat the same nonsense. It isn't particularly complicated. It's geared toward high-school and college kids.

There is no message of sexual repression by feminists. There is an excuse by men who insist that only they should have full dominion over everything in life, including what is posted on DU. They use that trope as excuse for holding on to power and demeaning and disrespecting women on this site. Most people can see through the whole charade perfectly clearly. It's all about asserting male domination. They don't respect feminists and indeed most of the members of this site enough to bother to listen to their concerns. That is as true for African Americans and Muslims as it is for feminists, as is evident to anyone who bothers to read the threads in the AA and Muslim groups. All they care about is themselves, what they want, and their determination to maintain DU as their little fiefdom of power, perhaps because they lack power in their own lives.

The kind of shit that goes on in DU hasn't been acceptable in any workplace that follows the law, in any congressional office, or Democratic Party office in well over 25 years. I don't know where people have been the last few decades that this sort of thing comes to news to them. It is all prohibited by federal law as part of a hostile environment.

Whatever. I'm done dealing with people who make clear that my concerns don't matter enough to even attempt to understand. I don't exist to them as a full human being with equal rights, so they don't exist to me.
