Dear Fox News; thank you for making Christmas SUCK!

I work in Medical Software and speak to my clients on a daily basis. Clients who are of different religions and ethnic backgrounds. Because of this, and because I'm respectful, I wish all who I speak to on the phone a "Happy Holiday" this time of year.

Well, some intolerant Fox News watcher, when I wished them this all-encompassing greeting, YELLED at me on the phone today, "It's Christmas!!" Yeah... actually fucking YELLED at me! Stunned, I said, "um, and you too." I hung up, dejected and saddened.

Happy Holidays has been an accepted greeting for as long as I can remember. We had some silly paper thing that hung on our front door throughout the 60's and 70's that said "Happy Holidays" and, for the life of me NO one ever objected to it! Fast-forward 40 years and NOW silly assholes who watch this God-awful, intolerant cable news network now ATTACK those who offer this greeting.

Fox News, you just plain suck for ruining this time of year with your divisive bullshit. You are NOT "champions of Christmas". You are helping destroy it.

I am as you are, not Christian, but I do wish everyone a Merry Christmas, have done that all my life, and to get into argument about some trumped up trivial stupidity, well, that's is not going to happen. The argument whether or not to say Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas to someone is so contrived as to be ridiculous, but, there are many, who listen to right wing radio, and are just looking for anything to start an argument, and to them I just say F off, as they are not worthy of any further conversation.

They love anything that causes people to get mad. Aren't the people who watch Fox mad all the time? Maybe that is a technique made up to keep viewers. They get their viewers to be pissed off at any semblance of neutrality or unity and more and more isolationists, and people who just plain become people that you don't like. From there they can say anything and their followers will accept it as truth.

People should anticipate the "Merry Christmas" Fux campaign and have a response -- a witty, devastating, thoughtful response ready to go. It's a hell of a note that Rational People are afraid to speak up against this sort of thing.

How many times have people around here expressed their apprehension if not plain FEAR at the prospect of confronting the Right Wing meme? It comes in in many forms -- from the crazy uncle at Christmas dinner to the anonymous caller yelling, "It's Christmas!" that Cooley Hurd described.
For gawd's sake, people! Your *fear* of confrontation is the reason these dummies are getting away with their hatefulness.
We know what they are apt to say. And we know what tone they will take -- including inappropriate anger. So there's absolutely no reason to be stunned or even upset. Plan the witty response ahead of time and FIGHT BACK.

93. Unless I am with someone face to face or know their religion....
Tue Dec 24, 2013, 09:22 AM
Dec 2013

I always say Happy Holidays or Season's Greetings.

Unless you have some reason to believe or know someone is a Christian it is indeed impolite to wish them a "Merry Christmas". What the "war on Christmas" crowd fail to appreciate is when you use the word "Christmas" you are wishing them to celebrate the virgin birth of a baby in Bethlehem, a baby that would save all sinners if you "believe in him".

That is very pompous indeed in a multi-cultural and multi-religous society. Yes Christianity is a proselytizing religion - i.e. the duty of each and every Christian is to spread the good news and convert others to the faith.

But it would be the same as if every Jew (I live in a very Jewish part of Atlanta) wished me a Happy Hanukah. While Jews and some Christians share the First Book of Maccabees in their Old Testament and Torah, not all Christians do. Hanukah is a wonderful story and indeed Paul in Colossians referred to the historical Jewish festivals as forerunners to the glory of Jesus Christ. But that is as far as Christians go in terms of recognizing Hanukah as anything more than a quasi-historical, wonderful story about light.

Out of respect for others it is that I use a generic greeting unless I have some information about the other person. I wish my Jewish friends Happy Hanukah at Hanukah and they wish me Merry Christmas at Christmas out of mutual respect based on the knowledge of each other's faith traditions.

There is no "war on Christmas". But what I have seen is a holiday that as a child was full of wonderment as much for the story of the birth of Jesus but of course the anticipation for what would be found under the tree the next day. But Christmas in our home was not a gross display of consumerism. Our parents exchanged one nice and a few smaller gifts with each other. The children got one "big" gift from Santa and then some nice, usually more practical gifts, from Mom and Dad and sibling too.

If there is a war on Christmas it is the consumerism and gluttony that describes western observations of Christmas. I used to think it was mostly in the U.S. but having spent a few Christmases in recent years in Western Europe and even Australia, it is Merry Consumption, not Merry Christmas. This at a time we have so many in our own nation around the world that are hungry, cold, sick, etc. It is indeed a disgusting sight to see the news clips of the consumer wars on Black Friday.

94. We need to celebrate a new FOX inspired holiday.
Tue Dec 24, 2013, 09:37 AM
Dec 2013

A holiday that symbolizes the way these soulless media shills and vindictive pseudo-Christians have ruined the traditional holiday.

For example instead of a tree we could construct a pole made from vertically stacked empty beer cans to symbolize the loss of traditional holiday warmth and good will. Then during the traditional feast there could be an airing of grievances by friends and family to symbolize the new standard of intolerance inspired by the FOX tradition. Later the family could gather together and the patriarch could physically dominate the weaker less aggressive family members in a contest of strength or feats of strength if you will to symbolize the bullying aspect of the new tradition.

Now all we need is a name. What to call it? What to call it?

comment from an article I was reading .........

"That said, as a believer, I get a little annoyed when people say they are "celebrating Christmas" but they are atheists, or agnostics - heck, even my Muslim neighbors put up a tree and lights and say they are celebrating Christmas. My Muslim neighbors bring me Christmas cookies and a Christmas card, they play Christmas music (actual Christmas music - gospel songs, classic celebrations of the birth and the 3 kings, etc - not pop songs that could be better classified as winter music), they have a grand old time and I'm certain that in certain parts of the world they would be in serious trouble as Muslims for this. Am I offended by this? Yeah, I kinda am...

I get it, it's my issue, and I'm not trying to put a damper on anyone else's enjoyment of a celebration near the winter solstice - I just wish they'd not say they were celebrating Christmas when their celebrations have nothing to do with the birth of Christ and/or they don't believe in him (as in either believe he existed at all, or believe that he died for the sins of humans)."

Either way the loonies will be mad as a hatter.....sorry you got yelled at by some asshole for a season greeting - jeez wtf

Tue Dec 24, 2013, 01:02 PM
Dec 2013

People, driven by corporate propaganda, have evolved December 25 into a day of Greed. Did early Christians celebrate Christ's birth in this way? No. Read the ancient Christian writings. No need to blame just Far-Fetched Fux...Corporations destroyed the meaning of Christ's birth. What most posters have missed is the following:

If Jesus Christ wasn't born on December 25, does the Bible indicate when He was born?

The biblical accounts point to the fall of the year as the most likely time of Jesus' birth, based on the conception and birth of John the Baptist.

Since Elizabeth (John's mother) was in her sixth month of pregnancy when Jesus was conceived Luke 1:24-36
we can determine the approximate time of year Jesus was born if we know when John was born. John's father, Zacharias, was a priest serving in the Jerusalem temple during the course of Abijah Luke 1:5

Historical calculations indicate this course of service corresponded to June 13-19 in that year ( The Companion Bible, 1974, Appendix 179, p. 200).

It was during this time of temple service that Zacharias learned that he and his wife Elizabeth would have a child Luke 1:8-13
After he completed his service and traveled home, Elizabeth conceived Luke 1:23-24

Assuming John's conception took place near the end of June, adding nine months brings us to the end of March as the most likely time for John's birth. Adding another six months (the difference in ages between John and Jesus) brings us to the end of September as the likely time of Jesus' birth.

Taken from the Good News magazine. Thank you for reading.

and most of us are very careful to say Happy Holidays because, well, we take care of diverse people, many of whom have a different holiday and even, in the case of many people from India, their holiday was in November so why say Merry Christmas? My fellow pagans (yes, we do have a secret handshake) all wished one another a happy solstice but we wouldn't push that on anyone else.

Alas, this year, I wasn't able to celebrate my holiday because I'm working insane overtime. My son, who is autistic, celebrates Christmas (all year long, if he could) so tomorrow I will say Merry Christmas while he opens his gifts.

In other words, Faux "News" may be trying to ruin this time of year, but from where I'm sitting, no one is listening.

I'm sorry that happened to you. I hope you have a wonderful holiday of your choosing.

It's silly beyond belief, and I, for one, am not going to let Fox dictate the rules of the game. I'm saying "Happy Holidays" to spite them and to maintain my Yuletide spirit and if someone takes offense....
