Sorry, I see people are kicking this one instead of or along with the new one from today, 9/8/13. So, I'm inserting the link to TODAY'S OP here as well since there are new posts not mentioned in this 8/27 OP.Sorry again for confusion.

(I was previously given permission by Skinner to post periodically about http://www.wishadoo.org, especially when it involves DUers, with this required disclaimer: "The administrators of Democratic Underground have given permission for one discussion thread on this topic. The administrators of Democratic Underground make no claims regarding the legitimacy or illegitimacy of this fundraising effort. Permission was granted by Skinner on 8/6/2010, and the moderators have been notified."
If you're not familiar with Wishadoo, please see my journal for previous posts. I respectfully ask that if you have concerns about the veracity of a DUer's request that you contact me privately. If you disagree with and dislike a DUer for any number of reasons and feel they may not be worthy of others' attention or assistance, please keep that to yourself. It has no place in these OPs. Thanks in advance for honoring that request.

Okay, so it's my 50th birthday today!!!!! Yowzer -- looks freaky to type that out.
For my birthday, I'm asking that you please K&R to keep this thread visible, and if you can contribute even $5 to any of these posts that you feel inclined to help, it will be a birthday gift to me! Little gestures can really add up.
I also want to share a wonderful message I received this morning, regarding Wishadoo! The person who sent the message referred a friend to Wishadoo! a while back, asking for help in finding temporary shelter for her cats. This followup about that situation was a wonderful birthday present in and of itself:
During her unemployment, friend had received unexpected financial help from a new friend, a struggling single mother who is riding a bicycle in the Tucson heat, no car. This new friend/single mother provided said financial help without being asked.
This week my friend will give this single mom her current used car, no more bicycling to work in the Tucson heat.
The ripples of Wiishadoo and paying it forward. I believe your site just oozes love and giving energy to anyone who touches it.

The first post below is new, the others are carried through from previous "Help a DUer" posts. The DUer's DU name is provided, so you may contact these DUers here or at Wishadoo! with any questions, suggestions, etc. Some of the wishlist posts are able to make use of a handy-dandy widget that shows the progress of a fundraisers so long as there is no browser conflict. There is a PayPal button on each of these posts as well.
1. DUer, mrmpa, is the most recent DUer Wishlist post. I've made good use of it being my birthday to ask all my Pittsburgh friends for help regarding job leads for mrmpa. Having been unemployed for a while (as too many of us understand all too well), she's in dire straits and is asking for help for September. Obviously, the hope is that a job comes through really soon, but in the meantime...

2. Duffyduff's Wishlist post is similar. We were initially hoping to raise $300 to get through the month of August, when she hopes to find more work as a substitute teacher, but after questioning her situation further, it's more realistic for us to try to raise a total of $600. She is in danger of losing her car, everything she has in storage, etc., all of which impact the ability TO find more work.

$520 raised thus far. Thank you!!!
3. Myrina has a post for you PET LOVERS!!! She is trying to raise funds to get her foster pup, Hammy, the surgery he needs. Just look at that face!!!
http://www.wishadoo.org/wishlist/189/assistance-requested-for-foster-dog-surgery/
Less than $200 has been raised thus far, so we have a long way to go.
4. Berlin Expat may be the first international post! He's trying to raise funds to get used appliances.
http://www.wishadoo.org/wishlist/186/refrigerator-and-washing-machine-used/
5. sunwyn is still trying to raise funds for a vehicle for her and her mom. Actually, an update from her regarding her situation was just posted in her Wishlist post.
If you have any tips re: a used vehicle, let us know. $175 of the $1500 goal has been raised thus far. Thank you!

PLEASE ALSO:
* Recommend this thread and keep it kicked for visibility.
* Please scan the Wishlist in general on a regular basis; some posts are simply asking for information. It's not always about money.
* ACKNOWLEDGE these courageous people who have made themselves vulnerable by asking for help. Please offer whatever support you can (information, advice, well wishes, financial or other support, etc.)
* Share Wishadoo! with others (online and in person)...your friends, loved ones, neighbors, co-workers, other networks and organizations; after all, the more who gather...

ABOUT WISHADOO!: Anyone is welcome to use the tools at Wishadoo, so long as the Terms of Service are adhered to (basically "play nice" and don't lie). Wishadoo! is a comprehensive portal providing tools, resources and inspiration to connect, help/be helped, and cultivate compassion, cooperation and authentic community in myriad ways, online and in our own "backyards." Wishadoo!'s tools have been designed to integrate and be of service to all sectors of community: individuals, neighborhoods, schools, organizations and businesses.
Any contributions to Wishadoo! itself go toward the cost of maintaining the site, NOT toward any Wishlist posts. That takes place one on one, between Wishadoo! members. If you are able to help with costs to keep the site going, I'd appreciate your generosity tremendously and will be forever indebted.

(1,488 posts)You make a difference every day.
Since this is in support of our own fellow DUers I challenge all with the ability to match my meager $15.00 contribution. For those who can't contribute money, you could promote Wishadoo on social media. For those who don't do social media I'm sure some good will and positive energy would be appreciated.
After all it's family, right?
Keep doin' what you're doin' OGR!!!
OneGrassRoot
(22,923 posts)Thank you soooooooooo much, ohtransplant!!!
I can attest to the truth that, even if someone isn't able to contribute (and, really, many people here can't, as even $10 is a choice between food and paying toward a utility bill, etc.), just being acknowledged is PRICELESS. To let someone know they're not alone is a gift, and each one of us can offer that gift to others.
ohtransplant
(1,488 posts)Acknowledgment is indeed a gift we can give all day every day.
It's a gift we can give freely yet costs us nothing to give. In fact the more we give, the more we benefit ourselves.
Great reminder...
