(1,022 posts)I was born in Auburn (Mercy Hospital, I think it's gone now), we lived on Silver Street Rd. in a white cape cod about 350 yards south of Sand Beach Rd. We visited Auburn a few months ago when we were looking at colleges for my daughter (we looked at Wells), and we stayed at the aforementioned Holiday Inn. Auburn is every bit as nice as I remember.
I still remember participating in the Easter egg hunt at Hoopes Park back in (ahem...) 1958.
Cooley Hurd
(26,877 posts)It's still here, but it's an elderly rehab facility now. You were out by the lake! A good friend of mine lived on Sand Beach. Her dad ran a heavy equipment company. Do you remember the Fitzsimmons?
Hoopes hasn't changed a bit. As much as I can bitch about Auburn, it's not the worst place I've lived.
My family's been here since the early 1800's My DU name comes from my great-great-great-great-grandfather who was one of the earliest settlers in Cayuga Co. Received a land-grant as payment for his service in the Revolutionary War.

(1,022 posts)I was in kindergarten when we moved to Philly but my older brothers might remember the Fitzsimmons.
One thing I noticed when we visited Auburn recently - I could see lots of stars at night. I can't remember the last time I saw that many stars. It's a beautiful area.

How Obama likes his Burger and Tuna Melt
So I had a chance to see some of the presidents takes on some popular favorites.. where
Barack Obama decided to see how Air Force One did burgers on his first flight on the plane as president-elect. Heres what Obama requested from the planes flight attendant:
- Cooked Medium-well
- Cheddar Cheese
- Dijon Mustard (the flight attendant asked if he would like Grey Poupon, to which Obama responded, thats fine)- Lettuce and Tomato
- Served with a side of salad or vegetables
- No fries? Wait, never mind as Obama said, Oh, Ill still take the fries
Grey Poupon mustard, a flavorful condiment favorite of the president
Obama-style tuna melt served with waffle fries. The second sandwich was still being grilled while I took this pic
"According to 60 minutes, Obama can apparently also make Chinese and Indian food stemming from growing up in Hawaii and once living with an Indian roommate. Either way, the presidents got a good take on food. Thumbs up!"
Bon Appetit!
there's more.. including recipe for Tuna Melt..

(83,335 posts)I never thought of mustard, pickles I use, but they are dill. I will have to try that.
As for the burger, I draw the line and totally 100% disagree with the President! I like mayo on my burger! Oh noooos!
Thanks for the video, Cha. It's not one that I have watched before.
Cha
(295,903 posts)it would be fun too see again. So nice. I had wondered if you'd seen it.
Any-way.. I take mustard on my Garden Burger But, back when I ate everything.. I took mayo, mustard, and catsup on the plate with the fries! And, yes, Cheddar was a good way to go.

(26,877 posts)I stood on the fender of a dump truck for about an hr.
All of a sudden, the cheers went up and a very bulky bus emblazoned with the Presidential Seal glided past.
It was very dark, and the lead cars of the motorcade blinded me so I couldn't see POTUS.
Epilogue: The Fox News Mobile Unit drove past me on MY street - I yelled "BOOOOOOOO! Stop LYING you DICKS!"
Pics to come - in the process of uploading them.

POTUS arrives:
In hindsight, I wish I took pics of the crowd - they went nuts!!!
I have my gripes about the overreach of the NSA, but it's still cool to see the POTUS!
Fun fact: 33 years ago, in the very same hotel that POTUS is spending the night, I (at 15) met Ronald Reagan before he was elected POTUS. He seemed nice (you know, for a dick), but I still worked the fall of '80 stuffing envelopes and ringing doorbells for Carter.

A good friend and coworker of mine happened to be at the Y also working out. POTUS jumped on the treadmill next to my friend and they worked out together for a bit.
My friend said that, at one point, President Obama pointed up at the TV's in front of them and said "don't listen to that guy. He doesn't know what he's talking about." My friend looked up and saw that it was President Obama HIMSELF being interviewed on the TV! This is a true story!!!!!!!!
Here's a pic of my friend (on the right) running with Obama:

(26,877 posts)He said, next to the day he was married and the birth of his kids, this was the greatest day of his life! He's a history nut like myself, so I pointed out that his grandchildren will have the pic (not the one in my post, but a better one taken from the front by my friend's wife) that shows their grand dad hanging out with the POTUS!

(295,903 posts)much for posting, Cooley.
Glad you had that link in bigtree's thread or I probably would not have seen this.
Is this like 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon or what!
Good on the President knowing how much better we feel when we get our exercise. I need to get out and do it right freaking NOW!
Cooley Hurd
(26,877 posts)I guess I should stop being a doughy, middle-aged guy and work out. I might actually meet a POTUS someday!
