Innocent civilians are murdered and this is who goes to prison. A lot of murderers are sentenced to as little as 8 years. But they have to make an example out of Bradley Manning so no one else dares expose us for what we are. In fact, I think the way he's been handled exposes something even more sinister. What the hell are we gonna do with this country?

the accompany the duration of the war. The American Civil War, WWI, and WWII are all good examples of this. At the beginning of the Civil War the guerrilla warfare in Kansas and Missouri, were abhorred because of civilians got drug into the fray. The longer the use of poison gas shell went on in the trench warfare of WWI, the less care was used as to how close to civilian population centers the barrage targets were. Our policy of tragic bombing during WWII went from accuracy (research the super secrecy of the Norton Bomb Sight) to carpet bombing of populations centers.
We fire bombed Dresden, it was our best/most horrific attack ever. We killed more people and destroyed more property than with nuclear weapon attacks.

That being said, each escalation was a response to enemy action; ie, Dresden was a response to V-2 rocket attacks on England. We counted civilians as civilians at the beginning of each conflict and very gradually added them to acceptable targets in response to escalating conflict.

I am not actively involved in the military now, so, there might be inside information to which I am not privy. But it seems to me we went to gunning down civilians really damn quick and with little provocation.
